sounds like a bad level sensor or wiring problem I'll send you a link to a previous thread that has some things you can check as soon as I find it

the prints attached in the above link are for a 99 model. The 97 model is the same

One thing you may want to try is the next time you fill up and the gauge is still reading about half way. Get under the fuel tank and give the side of the tank a good hard hit or two with a rubber mallet. If the fuel level changes on the dash gauge then you have a sticking sender
