Hey guys was just wondering does anyone else experience hard downshifting from OD? Mine does it but not every time. It's a fast instant shift with a "thud" heard throughout the truck. I don't know if it's a normal thing or not which is why I'm asking are you guys getting that too?

I have a couple codes to tackle (EGR, both banks are lean, hopefully PCV issue). It may be that causing it.

My 98 Crown Vic has the same transmission and does the opposite, the shifts are WAY too soft, and actually hesitant when cold. An expert told me that was a slightly worn piston in the valve body which is a common issue in these years, which I've also noticed others having (my dad's 98 van with same trans does it too). I think Ford made an upgrade to this which I ain't doing since hopefully the Vic is being sold tomorrow.

So this could also be maybe something just stuck in there? I'm thinking either that or computer/solenoid related. It's NOT a slipping issue which is very relieving.

I'm also changing all fluids so filter and fluid is going in it pronto, as well.

I just bought this truck and the shifts are beautifully executed and timed. Converter lockup couldn't be more perfect.

Edit: 1998 Expedition XLT w/4.6 "6" code and 4r70W "U" code transmission. I'll add info in my sig when I get to that. Right now I'm brand spankin new here. :)

If your trans fluid isn't burned, another cause for this is a faulty speed sensor sending erratic signals to the transmission control system. Watch your speedometer when stopping. If the needle seems to hang while coming to a stop, then it may be the culprit.
