I am working on a 2019 ford expedition 10r80 transmission. I’ve already overhauled the transmission with the updated CDF drums and checked all other components and replaced what’s needed. I have cleaned and installed a valve body and I get harsh engagement. I get a valve body from the dealer and the same problem is occurring. This problem only happens when the transmission fluid is warm. When it is “cold” it engages fine. When driven, it shifts through all the gears very smooth, my only problem is the harsh engagement. Any solutions? Thanks

Do a transmission relearn or disable the relearn feature and see if the tranny does anything different.

I have done both relearn and disabling and I’m still getting the same symptoms. I’ve reset the keep alive memory for the pcm as well.

No, clunk only happens when I take it out of park. When I shift from reverse to drive or neutral to drive the expedition jerks forward hard. When the fluid is not warmed up this issue does not seem to be present.

This is happening between two expeditions that I have been working on. Both tried the same procedures I mentioned earlier.

Does it do that if you go from drive to reverse… or is it an issue only going into drive?
My understanding is that if you do the CDF drum, you need the updated valve body and a software flash on the transmission control module.
I suppose you did use Fords transmission fluid?

Try this:
Put the hot or warm transmission in park, set the parking brake and then shift from park into drive with the parking brake engaged.

from drive to reverse it’s fine but vice versa it’s hard engagement, sometimes neutral is a harsh engagement as well. What updated valve body do I need? I obtain the valve body from the dealer. And for the software flash for the TCM, how can I go about that? I have forscan but I don’t think that’s an option in there. I know ford has their own software but I do not have that J box vcm device thing. I am not using fords fluid, I’m using Dexron VI ULV. I’ve used Dexron VI for ALOT of 10r80s and they seem to be fine. I’ve also tried setting the parking brake and shifting and still the same problem occurs. Thank you for your help by the way.

Yes I’ve already read through these. What updated valve body were you talking about earlier? I don’t see any new valve bodies, usually just get one from the dealer or overhaul some with or without a shift kit. Even the dealer valve bodies don’t work 100% of the time. You also said a tcm software update, where can I find more information on that?

I think the updated valve-body spool plate and control valve JL3Z-7H351-B
They do say to use Mercon LV transmission fluid.
You’re welcome!

To update the TCM you need certain programming tools. Easiest is to go to the dealer and get it done. These programmers aren’t cheap, then you need the file too from somewhere.

The part number you provided is the CDF drum. I did not know there is an updated separator plate, could you provide that part number? I will take it for programming to the dealer if I don’t find anything wrong in the assembly.

Here is the procedure.
I didn’t read all of it (yet). Getting late here.

I’ve skimmed through that earlier seems like a lot but might be worth a try if nothing else fixes it. I believe I have to purchase a j2534 VCI for that though, which is pricey. I appreciate your help, if you got any other tips let me know.

I've had the valve bodies serviced, CDF drum replaced, software updated, and the learning computer reset numerous times, and my 2020 still clunks (among several other annoyances). It's under a Ford extended warranty for another 18 months and the dealer insists everything checks out and that there's nothing "wrong" with it. I'm convinced there must be some other issue than just the valve bodies and CDF drum.

Yes that sounds like the issue I’m having, I am going to replace the whole assembly of the transmission and see if this fixes anything. The problem a lot of them seem to have is a lot of fine metal/trash get into the valves and make them stick.

My Ford dealer just overhauled our 2018 Expedition 10R80 at 98k miles under Ford Premium Care Warranty.
Shifting from park to reverse or to drive or any combination is very smooth, huge difference from before the overhaul. They did replace the CDF Hub, also the cylinder (PC3Z 7B177A), also replaced planetary gear kit (JL3Z 7L192A) along with many seals and bolts. I cannot tell from the receipt about any reprogramming. The recall for power train control module was completed before the overhaul. I do not see any evidence that they replaced the valve body.
The transmission exhibited very hard shift in the 3,4,5 range and was reason I took in for rebuild. As stated above, shifting between park, reverse or drive was highly improved too.

I just swapped the transmission for a whole different transmission and I’m still having the same problem. I believe this might be a software issue.
