Those of you that have high mileage, 150,000+ mile, first gens. Would you consider buying your rig as it is. The reason I ask is I'm finding some high mileage first gens, like 200k, that look to be in really good shape, no rust no tears in the leather etc. So I'm confident the po took decent care of it but should I go in expecting to have major repairs shortly or can I go a little while before I'll need a rebuild of the motor, axles, trans, or transfer case. I don't consider ball joints, bearings, brakes, etc to be major repairs those are just maintainence and I can handle myself. I'm well aware that there are factors specific to each example I'm just wondering in general terms, if it's been decently cared for would the mileage scare you off??

Any day of the week I would buy my truck as is. It has been way more rock solid than other newer vehicles in the family. It has not been treated like a cream puff either. I have put it through its paces since I have owned it. Not to mention, they are so dirt cheap that it just makes sense to pick one up. Look for one with the HD towing package.

the one in my sig had 237xxx when i got rid of it and was not taken care of by the po... so as long as it is in good shape and has been maintained 300+ is no problem to hit

You're in Minnesota too right? Any problems with rust? This is the one I'm looking at.
Blue 1998 Ford Expedition

Yes it is rusting bad on the rockers and starting to lose it on the fender wells, but we also salt our roads more than McDonalds does their fries. It is my understanding that ND is nowhere near like that and Expeditions I have seen out of that state are in better condition than mine.

I just moved to Thief River Falls so I'm new to Minnesota. You are correct ND just sands and last year started using some beet juice saline solution that they say works, it doesn't, which makes sure your vehicle is filthy all winter long no matter how often you wash it.

i have 252K and I would buy it again... twice over. I love this truck and it has been dependable, easy to repair and just some minor, normal wear and tear, problems.

One thing to note.. I have the 4.6L and admittedly a little small for the size of truck,... but a great vehicle over all... been to Texas twice ( when mileage over 200K) and no problems except gas mileage. And whoy buys these things becuase they are sippes!!!!:waytogo:

I've been here about two months. I work at DigiKey which is right next door to the arctic Cat plant. My SO and I are still probably going to get an Expedition EL for hauling the kids around but I'm thinking about upgrading to a 4X4 for my daily driver too. It would have to be essentially an even swap for my 04 impala, which is ok in the winter but not ideal when you live 22 miles out of town and will be hauling little ones around.

I have 172K on my odo (1997 gen 1). I wouldnt' hesitate to buy one at this mileage. Just be prepared to do at least some work to it.
I bought mine with 167K back in July 2012. I had to complete some work on it but that was expected. Since then it has been one of the best vehicles I have owned in terms of reliability. Since that initial work I have only had to do basic maint (oil, tires, filters, etc).

I should also mention that I don't put a lot of miles on my rig. Since july 2012 I have only put on 4,900 miles....that might have something to do with my vehicle reliability as well.

I have over 325000 km on my truck. Starts every time at -35 Celsius in the winter and runs like a champ all year. I treat her well with fluid changes regularly.

My navigator has 220k. I'm having a missfire but other than that no problems since I bought it with 180k.

I just towed a trailer with car on it from Missouri to Mississippi and back to Missouri. With no problems. Got bout 12.5mpg. Just be prepared for the regular maintenance off the bat begin high milage. But I would buy mine again. I love it. Looking to buy a 05+ Navi now though. Like looks of those a little more. But gas been really dependable. Never leaves me stranded and never down more than a day. Been on trips to Chicago and all over in it. Hauled race car to track all Summer and never missed a beat.

I found many Gen 1 expys with 200k miles also at great prices. I asked a few buddies that own expys if they would buy another and they all love their tanks. With that said I decided to buy one, a 2000 expy with 260,000 miles on it. Today it just rolled over 268,000 with no problems so far. I bought it from the original owner and he had a brand new expy in the garage to replace the one I bought.

Taken care of, they run great and last a long time.
