How to disable hands free foot activated tailgate sensor

Alright y’all!

I have a 2018 expedition max. Any time you are near the tailgate with the key fob it automatically opens, you can walk behind it not even trying to activate the foot sensor and it will open on you! Does someone have a way to disable the sensor? I want to be able to use my tailgate, but hate that it opens anytime I’m near it with my key!

Hands-Free Liftgate Madness

2018 Limited with hands-free (foot-activated) tailgate...Never opens/closes when I try; Often opens/closes when I don't (like when hooking up or unhooking a trailer); Several times has opened when I'm simply walking by 3 feet away (feet nowhere near the bottom of car). Anyone else experiencing...

Or you can just djsable it via the touchscreen.

@2020FordRaptor i think that’s only in the newer models. I have a 2018 and you can only disable the entire automatic tailgate, not just the foot sensor (super annoying haha)

Correct, just disables the Electric tailgate, not the kick to open feature.

Lots and lots of posts on here, but essentially you need to get a forscan compatible ODB adapter (has to have the HSCAN/MSCAN switch like this one I bought and have great luck with https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07S7W14X9), download and install forscan (https://forscan.org/download.html) essentially use the guided setup to find the right setting and change/apply it. But make sure you backup your as-built configs first. There's great documentation on the forscan site as well as lots of youtube videos out there.

Word of caution, depending on your relationship with your dealer, you may have to set some of these settings back to factory prior to getting service. Mine has had zero issues with some of my settings like steering wheel temps, hands free liftgate, etc.

Interesting, I can't find anything in our forums for the handsfree liftgate in forscan and don't remember seeing it there. Any chance you can share where that setting is? I'd rather do it that way too.

Very helpful thread, have had mine for less than a month now and was trying to get the hands free option to work open but after about 10 minutes of kicking the rear bumper in my driveway the neighbors began standing outside pointing & videoing me on their phones, (some were placing bets I swear)...
