I need a used y pipe for my 97 expedition. I cut mine to put these high flow cat on from my old h pipe and they were gutted so I don't have no high flow cats. I need/want to buy used but in working order y pipe

Even easier than that. They make spark plug non foulers that you can use. Supposedly its the same thread and you just screw it into the port for the O2 sensor in the exhaust then screw the 02 sensor into that. It spaces the O2 sensor out far enough away from the exhaust that it reads as normal. Definately worth a shot, they're cheap.
Where do I get them at?

Ok I hooked up straight pipe but didn't plug the 02 sensors in just to see how truck ran and it idled fine for a little then idled down then up and so on. I gave it gas and it revs up but when I let off it idles low. Do I need to hook up 02 sensors, is that why its acting the way it is? What else could it be? I need to figure this thing out real soon. Please help me out.

yeah with the o2 sensors unhooked the computer will never come out of "open loop" (basically it is running on factory defaults stored in the computer) this being the case there are a lot of enviromental factors that could be messing with the way it runs (ie: altitude, temp, humidity and so on). If you have nothing but straight pipe in there and hook up the o2's you will definatly set a CEL but it may run a little better or it may run worse.

Unfortunatly the only ways to make it run better (or at least eliminate that problem) is to either put in 2 cats or find some o2 eliminators that will send a fake signal to the computer.

Will the 02 nonfoulers work and do I just use them in the back 2 or all 4?

What are o2 eliminators, where do I get them, how much, and do I need all 4 or just 2 for the back? Will the 02 non foulers work or is that what you talking about?

well the non foulers are actually for the spark plugs but alot of people say that they space the o2 out far enough that they won't throw a code(never tried this so couldn't tell ya if it works).

As far as the eliminators, they are a small box that plugs into the harness ( basically a resistor pack) I have seen them for Mustangs and Camaros, but I don't see what would change that much between the expy and the mustang thou when it comes to reading o2 levels in the exhaust. You can usually pick these up from places such as Summit and Jeggs but they are a little pricey!

Try the non foulers they are really cheap and you can get them at most any parts house. All you have to do is pull out the o2 screw in the non fouler and then screw the o2 into that so it is a pretty quick job.

I went and got non foulers last night but didn't know what size to get and really don't think they long enough for the 02 sensor to fit into.

Ok, I but non foulers in the back 2 spots and hooked all 4 02 sensors up and truck don't want to idle or stay running. Could the 02 sensors be bad and how could I tell which on it is? No cel is on and I keep batt unhooked unless I'm trying to start it.

In order to dignose to the full extent you really should leave the batt hooked up. If you can keep it running long enough I am sure that you will get a CEL but everytime you unhook the batt (after running it) if there are any "soft" codes (meaning no CEL yet ) then you are loosing them. The "soft" codes will turn in to a "hard" code (CEL comes on) if they are present long enough.

I think that it will run softly and that gutted cuts will serve you the best. :D

????????????????? If you try to run it with all of the cats gutted the computer freaks because the o2 sensors are not sensing a change between the 2 sensors on each bank.

On the Expedition ( and most all newer vehicles ) they are equipped with 4 o2 sensors ( 2 infront of cats and 2 behind ) this way the computer can read how the cats are performing. If the computer does not see a difference between the front and rear o2 sensor readings then the vehicle will run sparaticly and you will get a Check Engine Light (CEL).

I don't think the truck will run long enough and don't think cel works, bulb gone or taken out because when I first start truck, it doesn't light up like it should. Any ideas? I still should get a code even tho it don't light up

Yeah, even thou the light is not coming on does not mean there are not codes present.

If the light does not come on when you just turn the key to the ON position then there is a problem with the bulb ( key on engine off the CEL should always be light until the engine is started).

If I where you I would leave the batt conected after the next few times you get it to start and then go down and pick up a cheap OBD II code scanner (dosn't need to be a high end expensive one, just one that will give you the code #'s) once you have the codes then post them up and we can narrow down your problem alot quicker than just guessing at everything.

Battery is still hooked up from when I tried to get it running friday. I'll try to get it scanned here soon to see what codes it spits out. Thanks
