I'm replacing the intake manifold gaskets because of a slight leak. When I finally got to remove the intake I found broken plastic pieces. These came from the insulator box. The box crumbled when I removed it.

My question is do I need this? What are alternatives to having this if I do need it?

It's just to keep a little heat off the bottom of the intake manifold, to try and cool the air coming into the motor a little for more power. I don't know how effective it really is. Many people leave it off, probably because they're hard to find. So, short answer, no you don't absolutely need it. But if you have the time during the repair and you want it back to original, why not.
