Hi, I am in the process of buying either a 1998 Explorer XLT 4WD with the 4.0 SOHC or a 1998 Expedition with 4.6. I have found a lot of info on the Explorer in regards to the cam tensioner and cassette problem but I have not found a lot of info on the Expedition. I am waiting to hear back from my wife on what her employer will do in regards to the Explorer's needed repairs but in the mean time we were offered the Expedition also. I found this TSB for the Expedition but cannot get more info just yet. Any one have any thing to say about the TSB on the Expedition, or any other comments? The Expedition has about 130k miles on it and we can get it for about $5k.

TSB 98B33 APR 99 Campaign - Coolant/Cylinder Head Replacement

Thanks in advance.

I've heard of a coolant leak on top of the cylinder head that can cause head repair/replacment due to spark plug blow out. Not sure if that TSB covers it.

I say drive them both and have both checked out by an independant shop.

The one that you like driving the most and/or the one with the cleanest record should be in your driveway. :)

Hi, Thanks for the reply. We bought the Expedition yesterday. We liked it better than the Explorer in the areas of ride, size, and engine. Now, I just want to add a CD changer to the Expedition fairly quickly and drive it for awhile to see what it needs.
