Loss of power

Yesterday I drove my expedition around 80 miles, it ran fine. Then I stopped at a light. When I went to take off I had no power. I put the pedal all the way down and the rpms didn't move. It started idling really rough. I restarted it and it idled fine in park but when I but it in drive and tried to go it did the same thing. I waited about 20 min and tried it again, it ran fine. Until I got to the next stop light and it did it again. Can anyone help? I can't figureout what going on.

It a 2001 with a 5.4L. It has 116,000 miles

Without codes, I'm leaning towards a failing fuel pump, or a clogged fuel system. Got to do that dreaded fuel pressure test. Are you smelling stinky Exaust like rotten eggs? Possible cats clogging! Most things will throw a code, but not always. Is this problem recent? Or has it been getting towards this power loss slowly?

This is the frist time it's happen. It's been running great. It's been having problems starting once and a while. I haven't noticed any bad smells.

Without any codes logged into the memory of the computer yet, it can be a myriad of things. I don't want you to be like some of the boneheads we've tried to help, that changed from A to Z and it still runs like crap. Pop the hood, make sure nothing's obvious like a broken, or torn vacuum line, or something obvious. Be sure the battery/ charging system is sound. They must be on these SUVs. Other than that it's detective time. Did you fill up with fuel, then this problem started? The more info you give us the better. This is a dealer quality group of guys out here, that can help, with your help. Moose.

I filled up earlier that day. I'm going to look again to see if I can find something obvious that overlook. I'll let you know

I had a MAF sensor do this to me on my 07. When it acts up again unplug the MAF and see if it helps.

Make sure your check engine light on the dash lights when you first turn key to on position. It may take a bit to get the computer to throw a code to the reader. Another possibility as outdare stated, is a problem with the maf sensor on the bottom of your air filter tube. Was any work done in your engine bay lately? You can try spraying the maf sensor with the appropriate maf cleaner. Keep us posted what you find.

Was it a hot day? Sounds to me like the " air inlet temp too high and the computer retards the timing " issue. Did you hear a " jet engine " sound coming from the engine compartment? That's your thermal fan locking up. Both the Retarding of the timing and thermal fan locking up will steal a TON of power. Ask me how I know this ( live in AZ ).
