if you had one last chance to buy any vehicle but....

It has to last you 20 years
Run for 200,000 plus miles
Have only a $25k budget
Can be car, truck, suv.

You’ll never buy another vehicle and you won’t have much cash for repairs.

Tell me what to buy!

Toyota Camry.

Would be the longest, dullest 25 years of my life. As exciting as bread. With a Camry I'd significantly reduce my chances of a heart attack or stroke from all the walking I'd be doing. Need something from the store? Its 6 miles away, be back in about an hour. Key my own Camry as I walk past.

Second thought would be a 60's something Beetle or 70's Datsun.

My 1996 Honda Accord, 4-door sedan. She's 'Bulletproof'. Only 117K on the odometer. Even after it was stolen three years ago and fixed back to new, she's still the most reliable car I have ever owned.
Since the theft in 2016, I had the 'ASE certified mechanics' install a fuel control shutoff switch. I also use the 'Club' steering wheel lock. Both are great passive and active deterrents.
My '96 Accord is a daily driver, unless there's a foot of snow on the deck.

$25,000 for a vehicle. I'd spend $24,500 for a brand new Honda Goldwing bike, and the other $500.00 on one hell of an all weather rain suit for here in California. You guys on the east coast or mid west, would have to settle on that pre-owned Toyota! 250k and up, God help you if you bought are beloved Ford/Chevy/Dodge. Well maybe a diesel.

For an SUV, I'd lean towards a used 4runner or Sequoia. For a car, a used Mazda 6.

Machete straight 50 weight oil, paint shaker vibration! Great bike. I worked on Harley's too. I'm an equal opportunity rider/mechanic. Your bikes my favorite color. That's the color I'd get the 19 Gold wing in. I wish Harley made something as smooth as the wing. When I wrenched at Eagle Rider here in SF years back, I'd almost always take home the Electra Glide . One perk of running the shop. Free gas, free bike.

If I only have $25K to spend now & am going to be broke for the next 20 years, I'd just as soon have one of these now...

One of my co-workers/buddies in college drove an older one and delivered pizza in it. :x We lost touch after him and his girlfriend asked me and my girlfriend if we wanted to swap partners for an evening. Strange dude.

My brother and nephew ride brand new Indians. Really sweet rides. Handle great for large bikes.

I think if you maintain ANY vehicle, you should be able to get 200k out of it. I know you could spend A LOT less than $25k and get >200k from a Crown Vic/Mercury GM. Not the most exciting car in the world but absolutely bullet-proof and ridiculously inexpensive to repair when it does need work. A time tested front engine-RWD platform, normally aspirated V8, and lots of inexpensive aftermarket parts support. If you want something a little more exciting in that platform, the rarely seen Mercury Marauder can still be had for a reasonable price.

With you on the Vic's reliability, but putting another 200K on one you're buying now? $25K covers a lot of repairs if you want to go that route I suppose. RWD is a non-starter for many of us in the north if it's our only vehicle though. I had a Vic and loved it, but I got snowed in a few times when I really, really needed to get out, so FWD or 4WD/AWD only for me these days.

Looking in the rear view mirror …
- bought my 2003 EXPY new for $28K
- 16 years later it has 180K and its a beater & falling apart (engine still good!)
- average cost to keep it on the road is $800 past quite a few years
So I guess the answer to this puzzle is NOT an EXPO
