First off I would like to introduce myself. My name is Dewayne Waldron and I've recently purchased a 97 exp with 120,000. I went through Hell in the process of getting her home because someone decided to shoot the back glass out of it while I was loading her up. long story short , it has a really bad missfire and exhaust leak. I've repaired the exhaust and replaced the plugs (which looked original) and still have the missfire. I ran the codes and cylinder #2 coil malfunction. Replaced the coil with one a buddy had laying around that was new and still have the same miss and hesitation. I even checked to make sure none of the wires had backed out of the cop harnesses. Should I go ahead and purchase a set of cop's? I have checked for vacuum leaks and have found none. Any ideas on what and where else to look would be greatly appreciated. Whatever it is seems to cut in and out while driving.

+1 on clearing the codes.

Sounds like the coil you put on was bad as well or you have another bad coil somewhere. You need to test the coils with a volt meter. I am definately not a fan of replacing one coil at a time. Especially if they havent been done in along time. Just my .02 Good luck.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the replies. I would rather change them all out to alleviate them from the equation. Ive always preferred the body lines of the 1st gen and got a hell of a deal on it though the trouble I went through getting it. Just gotta take care of a few things on her and she'll be solid.

New Ex with issues!

Who's ex doesn't have issues? Most likely the reason they are in the first place. Does this have anything to do with the window being shot out?? :jawdrop:

Now that I understand you are talking about an Expedition that's a little different. Plugs, Coils, Injectors would be the first place I would look as mentioned. You can swap coils/ injector with another cylinder to see if it follows the injector/coil. Beyond that it may be a mechanical issue, wiring, or pcm driver.

Misfire under load is generally ignition or fuel related.

Ha. No, not that kinda ex. I had to drive 2hrs away in the middle of no where and just so happened that the little shit in the woods playing with his 22, shot out the glass shortly after the transaction was made. So the guy that I bought it from give me back $200 and luckily I found a new one the same day for $150. just got a lot of glass to clean up and get rid of the miss. I took her out a lil while ago and didn't miss a lick. Then on the drive back home started to miss again.

Black, when you changed out the COP, did you also put in a new rubber boot (the part that goes from the COP to the plug)? If not, that is probably where your problem lies. These are known for dry rotting and they will allow the spark to jump through the boot. If you can touch the boot and your hands have black soot on them, you need to change the boot.

After that, get your hands on some fuel injector cleaner and run a tank through the truck. You may find that it is just needing some TLC. Then take it from there.

No, actually I ended up switching the boots with what was on the truck because the boot was different on the cop that my buddy had. Either way I should have my new set of cop's tomorrow that I ordered. I bought some gumout complete fuel system cleaner and have a few other things that I want to square away and I guess we'll see what happens. I need to start another post because I want to squeeze as much power from the engine as possible while staying NA and being reliable at the same time.
