Properly flowing exhaust allows the motor to breathe better. And while more air means more fuel, a higher power to fuel used ratio will mean better fuel economy in the long run. It's not how much you burn, but how well you extract the energy from what is burning. Hence the reason boosted and diesel applications get better mileage.
