Good Day all....

Before i start, just wanted to say new member, but been browsing as a guest for a while. i also want to apologize in advance for the questions i am about to post. I tried browsing the forums a bit, and i'm sure if i dig far enough i can find all the answers, but i am having a bit of an information overload atm. So i figured i should just post direct questions, per say.

3 questions....

I just bought a 2002 Ford Expedition, Eddie Bauer edition, 5.4 triton, the E code transmission. It has 170,000 miles. It's fully loaded, sunroof, power pedals, leather, etc. Bought the truck last night and drove the truck home on a permit(not inspected) and it drives and rides AMAZING!

Anyhow, 1st queston:

On my way home, everything was awesome. cruising along and speed limit increased. I hit 70mph (approx) and then heard for the first time ... a lower pitched howling noise, almost like when you hear large tires on trucks howling.

The sound increased and decreased....it would go kinda low, then hit up high, then back low. Almost sounded like it started in the front and as speed increased your heard it towards the back. Wondering if it might be like something in transfer case, rear end? or as simple as worn tires(the tires are very close to the end of their life, but ive never heard em pitch up and down like that before)....then again i've never owned a truck with tires this size.

---------------------

2nd question: Since the tires are at the end of their life, as i stated, i figured if i replace them. i might as well get the rims/tires i want.

i was looking at Nitto LT285/70R17 E121/118Q Trail Grappers. approx 33.15in tires 11.81 inches wide. fits the following rims. 7.5-(8.5)-9.0 And i believe the E121 means they are e-rated 10ply tire?

I wanted to mount them on the Fuel Hostage D53117909550 17x9 5x135 ET: 1 rims.

Will this work on stock eddie bauer suspension? My OEM rims/tires currently are 265/70R17. if not, what kind of lift, (cheaper for now), can i get away with to fit these tires. I do not want the tires rubbing, nor too much gap in the wheel well.

-------------------------

3rd question: Today i drove the truck to the body shop here, where a gentleman is giving me a hell of a deal on fixing the rocker panels. Upon starting it up, and for the duration of it running...i heard almost a small...i wont say "slapping" noise or a clear "tick" noise like a loose rocker valve or the exhaust tick(i dont think). It was just a very very low, subtle kinda "knock" but not drastic. Barely heard it from drivers side, but a little more noticeable on passenger side. I chalked it up to me being paranoid that something was wrong with the trucks engine, since i just purchased it. Upon giving it gas while in park, the motor doesn't make it more pronounced, and it cannot be heard from inside. I know it's a VERY vague and general question.....but is there anything i should check out, to calm my nerves a bit? i did check the oil quality and it wasn't blacked or burned no visible metal.

By the way, i picked the truck up for 2,000 dollars. Gentleman was moving out west. Sorry about the long paragraphs!

Great deal ... welcome to the forum from another recent joiner.

I'm driving a '12 LTD after having sold my '09 (5.4, Load Leveling Susp., HD Towing, leather). The '09 had 240,000 on it. I advertised it for $3800 thinking I'd need to negotiate down to get it sold. The day I advertised it, I had 3 full price cash offers! So for a rig that looks as nice as yours at that price, I think you got a steal!

Sorry I don't have good answers for your questions, but in over 100,000 miles of towing my 3500# boat, I found running premium fuel made the engine much happier.

soulsedge, take the truck out for another drive and get it up to 70 mph to get the noise to start. Now, in a controlled manner, make a quick lane change (enough to cause the body to roll slightly. Repeat going the other way. Did the noise go away when making the lane change 1 way, but not the other. If so, the hub on side that you were going to when the noise disappeared has a hub that is starting to go and you need a new hub. If you can do the hub yourself, it will run you about $100 or so. If the noise did not go away, then odds are you are looking at a U-joint on the rear driveshaft.

The tires you are looking at will work on the truck just fine as long as you don't go really wide on the rims. If you stick with an 8" wide rim, you will be just fine. I have pushed the truck to its limits without going hog wild with modifications by fitting 37x12.5's on 8" wide rims and only a 4" suspension lift. Please keep in mind that there are a few things to make this combination work else you are going to have some serious rubbing.

As for the ticking noise that you are hearing, what I want you to do is to go out to the truck and look in the wheel wells. Look past the wheel well liner at where the exhaust manifold bolts to the engine (may need to move the wheel well liner a little bit). You should see 8 bolts on each manifold. If you only count 6 or 7, then you have some broken manifold bolts and what you are hearing is some of the exhaust gases leaking past the gasket, causing the backpressure to drop too far, resulting in the valve bouncing. Pull the exhaust manifold off, fix the broken bolts, and put a new gasket on, you will be golden. The exhaust manifold gaskets are cheap, but it can be a bit of a bear to get to the bolts. If you are lucky, you can use a pair of vice grips to pull the broken off part of the bolt out of the head. Most people can do that.

Had the same ticking on my 2006 expedition with 115750 miles, had a little miss so I had the spark plugs replace. I have no noise. I first thought it was exhaust or cam phaser. Truck now run smooth, no miss and no tick.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Thermo, the tick doesn't sound like the exhaust tick i've heard on almost every ford f150 or explorer/expedition i've looked at that had exhaust issues.

it's not nearly as pronounced. I've chalked it up just to some miles on the motor. cause i was sitting at the border today and heard newer fords sitting beside me that were a lot louder then mine. It was just me being paranoid! haha.

i haven't purchased anything yet. But i'm pretty sure i'm going to go with the 2.5 inch lvl kit, and maybe 3 inch body. I think i'm going to get 35's

I'm just looking into how many extra mods will need to be done with 3 inch body lift. It's the Performanc Accessories kit i'm looking at, supposably it comes with the steering extender.

I dont think i'd really need anything else, from what i've read to put the 3" body lift on. =)
