New to expeditions. Please help with my 4WD

My 1997 Expedition has been confusing me, when i start it, if i switch it into either 4H or 4L it does some clicking and the A4WD light comes on, I can feel it in 4WD because if i try to powerbrake it wont do it but in 2WD it spins tires. The 4X4 or low range lights illuminate when i start it but wont come on when i switch into 4H or 4L. no matter what the switch is on it stays in A4WD unless the switch is on 2WD. Can i get some help

You need to have it in neutral for the transfer case to engage low range. If you are doing this and it still will not engage, maybe start looking at replacing the transfer case motor.

It goes into A4wd and the 4 wheel drive works, even in neutral it wont go into 4H or 4L the 4x4 light doesnt come on, just the a4wd light, but the 4 wheel drive works

My 2006 Expy EB does that too, I just noticed it today in some mud. It switches to A4WD, but not 4H or 4L, even in neutral.
