Two of the last three fill ups have ended with gas spewing out from the filler neck. It happened at two different gas stations, so I know it's not the pump. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm guessing it's a vent tube somehow. I was just wondering if it's something I can do a quick check of before I take it in under warranty.

I'm pretty sure I did. Is it a deal where it needs to be pulled out a hair to allow venting?

Sounds like a problem with the pump nozzle. Are you filling up at the same station/pump each time? I had this happen to me, filling up the wifes RX350 this weekend. Spewed probably $7 of gas all over the place before I could get it stopped. Luckily I was headed to the carwash immediately afterward anyway.

On a similar note, do you guys have a problem getting your Expedition completely full at the pump? I've filled mine 3 times now since I've owned it, and each time I let the pump cutoff then attempt to fill a couple more times and stop. Get in, and the gas gauge is a little left of the FULL line.

No. It was two different stations. It was right when the tank was full.

not sure what year you are - but my 06 had had the opposite problem in that the pump would constantly shut off before it was full. After some searches on either this forum or another one - they said that was the result of a clogged vent (i believe it was in the filler neck also). I just know that it was not a big enough deal to bother me and that if I held the nozzle out a little bit, it would not do it. so not sure that the vent tube would make it overflow. that really does sound like faulty nozzles. It would certainly be irritating, but does not sound like a vent problem.

The one station I've filled up at many times with other vehicles and had no issues. I know there's an issue like this with the 05-09 Mustangs. And that comes from a clogged Evap canister. Which according to my wife her car now has. So I'll have to check the canister on the expy as well.

FWIW, for anyone that's filled a boat up and didn't know about the lack of venting, it acts just like that.

The pump shutoff is a function of the nozzle. When gas backs up in the filler neck it hits a trigger in the nozzle that shuts it off. If it keeps flowing the problem is in the nozzle unless it's backing up in the vent and not hitting the nozzle.

Does the gas keep flowing out or is it more of a burp?

The reason that the truck pukes up fuel is because the tank is getting slightly pressurized when filling, and when the fuel stops flowing that pressure pushes it back up the filler neck.

As stated before, the issue can be a plugged (or water filled) evap canister. This is what happened on my brother's SportTrac.

It stops flowing. Which I'm glad about because I had to step away for a second to let the pressure die down.

Any idea where the evap canister on these trucks?

Exactly? no, but it does have to be close to the tank and above it.

I can tell you where it is on the SportTrac.... but that probably doesn't help anyone here.

The one on my G2 Expedition is around the spare tire...

One thing to keep in mind: While it may be near the fuel tank on your truck, it isn't on all vehicles. I have seen them in front fenderwells before, all depends on the manufacturer-doesn't matter where it is, as long as the lines are hooked up properly.

From a quick search on Rockauto, assuming you have an 07 Expedition, you should be looking for this, which doesn't look like it'd be hard to find..

I have an 08. Hopefully it's in the area as your's.

Yeah, the canister on the Cobra is up in the passenger side fender well. And our 06 GT is by the tank. Couldn't get much more different if they tried.
