Has anyone else used a K&N drop in filter and seen a drop in gas millage?

I have a 2007 Eddie Bauer Expedition EL with about 34K on it. 4x2 and 5.4L engine.

I put a K&N drop-in filter a couple thousand miles ago and before that I was getting about 15.4 or so miles a gallon. Now after using it for about 2500 miles, I have noticed a drop of gas millage down to about 13.2 or so.

Anyone else have this problem?

Did you make sure to disconnect the battery so the computer can relearn the new behavior? Also I too lost MPG.. Don't you just luv the louder intake noise.. I just can't keep my feet off from flooring it :)

Nope. For the 2 tanks of fuel I used a K and N I noticed no difference in MPG. Hell I havent noticed anything significant from paper to k and n to airaid sythemax dryflow and that includes performance and MPG. I will say that Im happy to never have to replace or oil a filter again. Just pull it out, hose it off and let it dry while doing an oil change.

Day 2......

Well my gas millage is 1.5 to 1.7 miles a gallon better with the Fram regular filter.

I did not disconnect my battery to do any resetting but I didn't see that was necessary anywhere in paperwork.

Going back to regular paper Fram filter. An extra 50-60 miles per tank is Waaaaaaaay nicer than a couple extra horsepower (Supposedly).

Thanks for all your input.

Are you talking about the intake silencer?

My 2004 4.6L didn't have one either Baker. Mine is just the accordion tubing to the corner and to the Intake. All single wall (except for where the MAF sensor is of course).

Well if it is in there, it is the tube that leads around the bend. It is inside the accordion portion. Here is a link to a post on how I did it.

It is possible they did away with it on 2nd gens in favor of the additional box silencers. Hard to say.

Can you see an opening in the sidewall of the elbow? That would confirm if the silencer is already removed. There is a picture of the inside of the elbow on that link I posted that shows what I am getting at.

Have the guys loosing gas mileage using the K&N cleaned your MAF?? An over oiled filter will cause oil to build up on the sensor and scew the reading.

I don't know if you already converted it back, but it is always a good idea to reset the comp after doing any intake mod since there will be some change. The computer will still be using the old data that it had collected. Not saying this will fix your problem, but it is worth a shot. I too saw no change with my K&N drop-in.
