Hi Folks,
Greetings from Saudi Arabia. I'm a Brit Expat living and working in these parts. My GMC Suburban (1996 K2500) unfortunately exploded into flames last week due to an internal fire so I'm in the lookout for another truck .Have always liked the look of the 2nd Gen Expeditions, so went to take a look at one today, have a couple of questions.

Truck in question is fully loaded, 4x4, V8 5.4L, leather etc. It's a 2005 model, US import, with around 95k miles on the clock. When the truck is idling, it makes quite a noticeable ' chugging ' sound. Not knocking, but a soft steady chug and is quite loud. However, once inside the truck and driving, it's not noticeable at all from inside the cabin, and actually, the truck drives really nicely, much better than my considerably older Suburban. I asked the seller, he started telling me about the catalytic converter causing it to make the sound, and I kind of got lost with what he was saying. Any ideas what / why it makes that sound? According to him, it's been like that since he bought it, he's had it around 18 months and is now leaving the country so selling it.

The other thing is that the engine check light is permanently lit on the dash. Now, I had a Chevy Trailblazer and this was always prone to the engine check light coming on and staying on. Again, according to him, this is connected to the catalytic converter.

Last question, the Sat Nav system asks you to insert a disc. Apparently this has been like also since he bought it. It's a standard dash head unit, so is this a tricky install to configure the sat Nav, do I need special discs only available from Ford? Does the head unit connect in any way to an iPhone or is this best done through an FM Transmitter?

Rest of the truck looks and drives great. Everything works as it should, all the buttons work, AC Is great. Thanks for any info you can offer. Cheers.

Not sure what the noise is, but I would take it some where and have the codes read. When you do that try to have the codes read by someone that can read all of the ford modules, not just generic obd II - that will help reveal any hidden problems.
As for the nav ford used CDs for north america there is a total of 12 disks, so not sure what would be available where you are at.
Good Luck - they are great trucks!

Ok - thanks for the heads up. Will have to try an independent Ford workshop I think, not so sure if I can take it to the main dealer for them to diagnose. If I do pursue it, I would take it for for a pre purchase inspection which is normal for this neck of the woods, they usually run a computer diagnostic check, but as far as I know, this only really checks the cylinder outputs to ensure they are all firing properly. The inspection also looks at overall condition of the truck - underneath, body work check etc etc.

In addition - any help me to identify which 'model 'of Expy it is? I think it's a XLT?
Spec are:
5.4L V8 engine
Leather seats
Two tone steering wheel
Front grille is black on black - no chrome.Colour is also black. In my view -looks fantastic.
Sat Nav - though this isn't functioning at the moment
DVD player for rear passengers
Power folding third row seats
Sunroof

Went to see it again today, it's a "Limited" version. Showed it to my regular mechanic, as soon as he heard it, he advised against buying it. Time to walk away. Shame, apart from the engine, lovely car all round.

Will keep looking, I think I'd like a 2nd Gen Expy, if the budge can stretch maybe an early 3rd Gen.

Edited to add: I spoke to the seller who then rang his own mechanic. Apprarently, the work can be done on the car, something to do with fixing the lifters. But I had a bad experience with another car in trying to fix the engine, and it just went horribly wrong, so decided against buying a truck where the engine would always be in question.

Went on the hunt last night to a few local showrooms, only had newer 3rd Gen in, but too pricey for me.

For reference - the asking price of the truck was 43,500 Saudi Riyals. Equates to $11,500. Used cars here tend to depreciate less, especially the well known American / Japanese brands. With petrol prices so low, big engine cars have a far higher resale value than perhaps in Europe / US.

Here's a question ( might start another thread) - how much would a truck like that cost in the US ? Might be worth me importing one.
