Since I bought my 2006 Expedition back a few months ago, filling it with gas has been a challenge. I think the tank is not venting very well as the fuel dispenser pump is shutting off a lot when I go to fill it. Where should I start trouble shooting this problem? Are there any common causes for this issue?

The gas pumps today actually create a vacuum to suck out the fumes to keep from venting to atmosphere. At least I believe its the same nation wide.

I think the pumps shut off when fuel splashes back up into the dispenser. Not really a vent issue. I have also had them shut off when the seal was broken so maybe ?!

Sometimes particular pumps do not work well for me with my work van. I try and remember which ones and use others. Sometimes changing the angle of the gas dispenser helps for me as well. (rotating it)

I am no expert by any means on this subject just stating some of my thoughts.

My truck does that if I put the nozzle as far in as it will go. (Get your mind out the gutter...) but I have found if I pull it out about 2 inches it fuels just fine. Just a design flaw in the filler tubes I think.

I've tried shell, HEB (a local brand), and Costco. Costco was the worst. At the others, I could fill up at with the handle half pulled.

My truck does the same thing. In Indiana we have the old style pumps, no suction thing on the nozzle. I've tried all different pumps, I've tried waiting until the tank was empty and the reserve light came on I did that a couple times because someone said the charcoal canister may have had fuel in it and that was supposed to clear it. The only thing that works for me is to pull the nozzle out a little and rotate the handle slightly towards the tail light and that seems to make it work okay.

Bumping this back up as I'm tired of fighting this issue on my wife's expedition. Has anyone tried anything other than ExpeditionAndy's solution? I'm wondering a larger vent valve or re-routing the darn thing might help.

Soooo.... Guess I also now am experiencing this and I guess it is very common and there is no fix... Luckily mine only shut the pump off once today going from empty to full tank [emoji120]

What I do, I disconnect the vapor line at the purge valve under the hood when I refuel, makes it refuel normally. I think the only solution is a new vapor canister but not ready to drop the dough on one yet... :)
