Push button start and key proximity

Is there a spot within the Expedition where you can place/hide your key such that it is far enough away from the steering column so that the push button start won’t work?

I’ve tried a few spots and the truck can still start.

I’d like to lock my keys in the truck (using the keypad to unlock) when hiking/biking/fishing and have the piece of mind that should someone get in they could not simply press the push button to start the truck and drive away.

This is going to sound goofy but...take some foil along and wrap up the key before you leave the vehicle. A buddy of mine used to do this with his. Admittedly, his was an older vehicle and not an Expy, so tech may have advanced past this, but it did work for him.

Because no, I think they specifically designed it such that if the key is in the vehicle, it works. Which is actually quite convenient as I often leave mine in the cargo area when I’m loading up kids and stuff.

I do this too. I think the if someone broke into the vehicle the security system might disable the vehicle. I'm not sure, but I hope so.

Maybe I can roll the window down, lock the truck, reach in and open the door from the inside. This hopefully will set off the security system and then I can try hitting the start button and see what happens...

If you lock the vehicle with the keypad, it should disable the key and start of vehicle until the proper code is entered to unlock.

Edit: just tested in my 2018...

1) leave key inside (anywhere you want)
2) lock car with keypad by hitting 7,8,9,0 at same time... basically stick you finger on the middle of all four of them
3) try and get in and you cant
4) unlock with your personal code

Can't you unlock it with the Ford app on your phone too?

I did not try my other fob... i just meant that I could see my fob sitting on the seat and the vehicle would not open the door even though that fob was in proximity

And yes you can always use the ford app to unlock

My cell phone can be locked with number code. They should make push button start vehicles, with a option to do it.

I tried the pouch they gave me for my EZPass and the key still works.

Ford (and Mercury, and Lincoln by extension) vehicles have had this feature for, literally, decades.

I think he means a vehicle that can be started with the keypad. I agree it would be nice to be able to unlock my doors AND start the vehicle from the number pad.

Funny, there are three ways to start and five ways to lock/unlock the vehicle yet we always want one more....

I left the key in my coat pocket that I put in the cargo area at the back. Key not detected. Wouldn’t start.

I leave my key in the expy all the time in the door pocket and lock it with the app. I don’t even know what my door code is.

If they want it, they take it. Key or not.

You can add your own code. Not a bad idea for a backup.
