We have a 2018 XLT and towed a 25’ 5000lb hybrid camper from Chicagoland to the Black Hills. With tow haul mode, 87 octane at 70 it ran mostly in 8th gear around 2400 rpm and got between 7 to 7.5 mpg at 65 MPH and ran in 8th around 2200 rpm and 9th around 1800 rpm, we got around 8.7 mpg. I’ll definitely try the higher octane, and check on the thermostat next time I take it in. Honestly my 2004 suburban 1500 with 5.3 V8 in 3rd gear out of 4 at 65 with tow haul and 87 octane was a little better between 9 and 10 mpg. When does the boost come on?

It varies based on engine load. Try the higher octane and lock out the top two overdrive gears. The engine will run in top gear which will increase boost. Running at higher RPMs and lower boost will probably increase mpg slightly. Octane makes a difference as well because the engine will advance timing.

I have pulled the same large and fairly tall ~10ft 8k travel trailer with a 17 and our 19. I usually tow at 65-70. I typically see 7-8.5 mpg. I think the 19 tends towards the higher end of the range but not by much. I did get 5mpg in the 17 once towing at 70 but that was with a pretty stout headwind. On the other hand a tailwind pushes it just over 10mpg.

I feel like the 10speed pulls a little smoother with the extra gears. That being said both have more than enough power to maintain that speed and more in any situation I have been in.
