Hi, my button on the rear handle to open the lift the rear tailgate is only intermittently working (not power liftgate, the button just engages the actuator to release the door). Anyway, I looked around and surprisingly there really seems to be very little information about this online.

Ford wants to sell an unpainted handle with the button built in. Is the button serviceable/replaceable, or do you actually have to replace the handle (which is outrageously priced I may add)

According to the parts explosion, it does not appear the button is available independently. Part number for handle is
8L1Z-7843400-AAPTM. Available from online ford dealers like Tasca Parts for around $400 Tasca Online Price

On Ebay, stated to be New OEM for $231 https://www.ebay.com/p/1811134303

I would suggest you could find one - possibly in your original color, from a recycling yard.

Of course, if you are going to rely on the dealer to install, then you will have to pay their price for the part.

If I were here, you would know it !

This is why alot of folks call them "stealerships", hahaha :)

But yea, $400 for a door handle with a power button is ludicrous IMO !

@Milkman

Does your key fob have a button to open the liftgate and is it working ?

If so, I would just live with it as is, but that's just me......

**** UPDATE ****

Here are switches that EBay "Says" will fit the Expedition. I have no clue, but for the price, I'd buy one and try it.

My key fob only has a button to lift the glass, not to unlatch the liftgate unfortunately...

Most ebay links in this thread aren't working. Not sure if eBay is having issues or what.

I did find the following on Amazon and bought it. The switch looks shallow enough and may fit in the handle, but I am not sure. I was hoping someone else did this and could confirm before I spent tomorrow morning trying to take this apart. We will see.

Oh you don't have to worry about that with me. Nothing more that I hate than finding a thread from a long time ago, and the person that started it never reports back. I HATE THAT.

I am not a photo journalist (lol), so you all are just going to have to deal with my worded description. lol. This is probably very similar with the door closed, but I was able to keep screwing around with the old button to get it to pop the rear lift gate door one more time, so I did that. I would put something there so the door doesn't latch again while you work on it, because there will be several up and down movements of the tailgate.

The part that I linked from Amazon above did work and fit perfect (Ford part number = 1L2T-14K147-AA). Here is how I removed it.
1. To the right and left of where the rear glass latches, there are two body plastic rivets. Pop those out. Keep the glass open.
3. The plastic panels on the rear of the lift gate are two pieces. A "U" on the top (around the rear glass), and a solid plastic piece on the bottom. Pop the top "U" first. They just pop straight back (toward the front if the liftgate was closed).
4. Remove the inside plastic handle that you use to pull the tailgate down. This requires a Torx bit
5. The solid plastic piece on the bottom of the door just has about 10 body clips. Pop those straight back (toward the front if the liftgate was closed).
6. The solid plastic piece should just go up and out (to clear the glass actuator)
7. On the bottom of the inside tailgate, there are two circles each one having a silver nut on the inside (this is what secures the handle to the body). Remove these with a deep 7/16 socket
8. Unplug the button which comes through the left side of the tailgate to give you a little room to work. Remove the handle from the door to make it a little easier, but I did it while the wire was still attached to the body
9. On the back of the handle there are 4 7mm screws. Undo those. The handle backing will separate from the painted handle.
10. Just use a flat head screwdriver to push the clips inward toward the switch while pushing it out of the housing (look at the new one and it will make sense).
11. Unplug the wire from the switch

Install the new one following the reverse directions. Unfortunately I broke one of the body clips on the solid plastic piece in step 5 (the plastic stud that the metal clip attaches to). I really don't know how to avoid that with the design. I hope this helps someone else in the future.

Thanks Much - I'm sure it will save someone else here some grief. Pis***es me off that ford will not list that individual part #. They did the same thing to me when I needed a Positive battery terminal for my 2017. Wanted to sell me a 400 harness. Finally found the part number on NSTHA website.

YES I had the same problem with the positive battery terminal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I took a chance on one that I found on Amazon that looked like it would work and it did. It is outrageous that Ford does that, especially for items that are wear items (like a switch or battery terminal).

I had a similar problem on my 07 XLT, basic pull handle lift gate not working. Me being a cheap bast*rd not wanting to spending OEM price on a new handle assembly because I knew it was electrical I removed the handle to inspect it for electronics and lone behold there is a microswitch the handle activates. Of course its not available directly, so i did some research and found one for another car brand. Had to modify it slightly but it worked out.
Something like this 1743434870205.png
What I had to modify are the two little nipple tabs. They were on the wrong side so I got a fresh razor blade and sliced them off flush and super glued them to the correct side.
I did this August 2022 for $20 and has held up since, its now March 2025. Just make sure the plug matches.
Hope this helps others.

Before spending money on switches and handles, there are tests that could be done. Does your 2011 have keyless enttry buttons on the doors? If so, after entering the unlock code, immediately hit th4 "5/6" key to open the glass. It should open consistently. That should verify if the latch mechanism works correctly. Learning Ford's "hotkeys" comes in handy as most vehicles use the same. Anyway, another issue is moisture, rain, and corrosion getting into the Molex electrical connections within the lift gate. It's easy enough to unplug and inspect them. I had an intermittent rear camera problem. The connector was the issue. A good cleaning with Deoxit and re-greasing the plug with Ford Electrical grease XG-12.

If you are interested, here is the actual part number for the Ford terminal. Part #: BT4Z14450AA, made by Royal Power Solutions.

I had tried that exact part from Amazon, but I just didn't like that starter wire crimp. I bought this one and it worked super well:

Since my truck was under warranty, I wanted it to be OEM so they could not blame non-OEM parts for future problems, but your solution is certainly faster and easier.
