Hi everyone, I am working on an overland build for my 2013 Expedition.
I have the standard 3.31 open diff code 15, and was planning to regear to 3.73 with e lsd because I will be upsizing to 35 inch tires.
I researched online and the forums to get the right code that will work with my 2013 but couldn't find a clear answer.
Today I came across a 2016 with axle code 3L in a scrapyard, will this work with mine?
What are the codes I should look for that would work with my gen that is 3.73 with lsd?

Code like axle code on the door tag? Just look at your axle to determine if you have an 8.8 or 9.75. Then find the same size axle with the gears and locker you want. There should be a tag in the diff cover that tells you the ratio.

I feel like had found that the navigator came with 4.10s that fit? Cant recall, but it seems like I had found complete take out units on ebay that were reasonable. I keep talking myself in and out of making that change. Hard to tear up something that's working well enough 90 percent of the time.

My 2010 came with 3:73s but was a bit laggy with 35" tires. Regeared to 4:10s and it drives like stock. Cruises fine on the highway and has plenty of gear when in soft sand. If you're spending the money anyway just do it right.

Ideal would be 4.10s
Axle code is 15 on mine, the standard 3.31
What code should I look for to get 4.10s?
I didnt find any yet on scrap navigators and expeditions. Most are 3.31 some 3.73

I actually was not aware that they came with 4.10s, perfect I will go for another scrapyard trip and look up all the codes I come across

Might want to do some research first, may have been later years of navigator that still fit the expedition. I was looking for a bolt in option, something I could add a lunch box locker to and bolt it in.

Go with 4:10s for 35s. I am not sure why you would need to go to scrap yards because you can get new ring/pinion for 410s from Ford, SVL, or Motive Gear. You can also get LSs, TruTracs (for the rear), and lockers. Either way, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Based on finding axles in the scrap yard, I was assuming he was taking the whole axle so he didn't have to set up gears.

Update!

I am getting a good deal on raptor 4.10s, front will come with a locker.
Just wanted to make sure they did bolt right up? Even my stock axles will work with the front raptor diff?

Definitely worth test-fitting an axle from your truck into the new front differential before you go through the trouble of dropping the old and bolting up the new. Axles pop out easy; maneuvering that front housing in and out of position in the driveway is a bit of a challenge.

The Raptor, F150, and Gen 3 Expedition are 8.8 inch front differentials with 31 splines, so the Raptor front differential should work for you. Great way to avoid having to F with gears, backlash, and bearings. The only thing I can think of that might not work out is the CV joints - Raptor probably has different CVs than the F150 and Expedition because the Raptor is wider. So you might need to make sure. Keep up updated, as this would be a great project.
