I am assuming the '09 Expedition EL I purchased used has an aftermarket remote start on it.
Problem is, I have no idea how it works.

This morning I was messing around with the remote pushing buttons to lock, unlock, lock doors...and it starts!

I noticed the drivers door was unlocked when this occurred FWIW.

I know the GM vehicles one usually pushed the lock button once or twice and then the remote start button. this is obviously nothing like that since I am using the factory key fob.

Does anyone have any ideas? where would I even look for the 'brain' of the system to get the make and model?

I know the Ford remote start I had on a previous vehicle, you needed to hold down the lock button for about 3 seconds for it to start or stop. Might want to try that.

So, I just messed around with it for a while and finally found the pattern!
It is lock, unlock, lock(hold for 3 seconds).

You hear a starter solenoid or something click and then it starts.
The crazy thing is that to turn it off, one needs to put the key in and actually shift it out of gear and then return to park. Then when turning the key off, so does the truck.

The other thing I love is all heat, radio settings run as when last left parked.

Try to triple-tap the lock button on the remote. This is how my 07 remote starter works, after triple-tap I get two horn honks and she starts up. The doors stay locked until you hit the ulnlock button. Triple-tap the lock again to kill the engine.

Mine is a Limited, but the remote start appears to be aftermarket, although it uses the OEM Ford keyfob. There are (2) modules under the dash that are wired in. An "RS-00 Cool Start" which I believe is a Crimestopper product, and a "Fortin Key Override"(Transponder data bypass).

I am not sure what brand it is. I haven't dug into it any further.
It starts with the lock, unlock, lock(hold) sequence.
It shuts off if I apply the brake.

I have the same type which I installed.

Audiovox AS9233ST Car Prestige Add-On Security and Remote Start Upgrade to Factory Keyless Entry

There are additional key FOB's that come with it, but the selling point for me was the ability to use the factory key as you mentioned without carrying another remote.
