Tony,

I have the same vehicle. 2022 SPP. And live in Rochester NY. Car is coming up on 25000 miles and also looking for wheel/tire change. Great discussion.

Binghamton here. It’s great to have members who are willing to share, and offer their experiences. It’s definitely swayed my decision on what I’m going to purchase.

Not trying to persuade you one way or another, just pointing out a few flaws with the review you have seen.

Tests on brand new tires are one thing, but you've got to keep in mind the mileage and long term performance too. The Continental is rated for 70k, the Michelins are rated for 75k. Even though the tire price is 15% more for Michelin - that added mileage drags it down to 8% if you get the rated mileage.

Tirerack reviews put the Michelin performing better in every category over the course of the tire's life, I've personally put both on vehicles and Michelin has exceeded the rated mileage where Continental has not gotten the rated mileage on the 2 sets I put on. I've been happy with the Michelin performance out even up to 80k miles, where as the Continentals got loud & had noticeable performance degradation around 40k miles.

Usually what happens is that they'll prorate the mileage you've gotten out of the tires and provide a credit to get them replaced, but it's not when you have performance degradation and it was when they hit the wear bars. So in my case, I got a credit for like $40/tire because I was at the wear bars at 60k after 20k miles of poor performance and could prove that I had normal alignments and rotations - that credit went right to Michelin where I didn't notice performance degradation until closer to 65k miles and made it through summer at 80k before replacing with another set of Michelin. For me, if I'm putting tires on something I'm going to keep then I now default to the Michelin.

I've had the '22 SPP since I got it brand new, other vehicles we've had between an Explorer ST, pick up trucks, Jeeps, we've messed around with a variety of tires. I do a tire rotation at every oil change and an alignment once a year because I want to get the most mileage out of the tires. The General Grabbers that came stock on the SPP were terrible, I've been very happy with the Michelins and have about 35k on them now. We do a lot of driving here in NH where we get plenty of snow, ice, and have a cottage with a long dirt road - only issue I've had was picking up a screw in a tire from my shop.
I just pulled the trigger on a set of Michellin Defender LTX MS2 tires. Thank you for your input. (Purchased through Tire Rack, with an $80 instant savings at checkout.) Should be here tomorrow. I shipped them to my local installer and will have them installed next week!

Our Pirelli AS Plus 3s are great so far. Unsure on the longevity, but we'll see. It was a hard choice between those and the LTX MS2s. I had those on the front of our Armada, and didn't like them as much as the previous gen LTXs that we replaced. There was definitely more road noise with the new ones and they seemed to tramline some.

I decided on the MS2's. They seem very well suited for the long winters where I live. As expensive as they are, I hope I'm not dissatisfied with them!! The way I'm looking at it right now is, that ANYTHING is better than the General Grabbers that came OEM. They are the worst tire I've ever had on any of my vehicles. They were relatively quiet, but horrible wet traction and terrible snow traction.

Just had these put on my '22 SPP.... I love them. Only driven about 200 miles, but they're great. Got them from Discount tire

Have Michelin CrossClimate2 on a ‘13 Honda Odyssey, they’ve been great and have the “mountain & snowflake” rating.

Have Michelin Defenders on ‘06 and ‘24 Expeditions, love them too.

I put Cross Climate 2 on my wife's Mercedes E350 4matic wagon, she loves them. she got caught in the snow up near Lake Tahoe, said they were totally stable and drama free, had good traction even on a steep driveway with 4-5" of dry snow.

This is absolutely awesome! I am currently in the same boat and I think I'm leaning towards the Michellin Defender LTX MS2 also. I have BFG KO2's on my FJ Cruiser, and although I love them, I'm trying to keep the sporty "land yacht" look on my Expedition.

Hi TonyR0206: I am glad to hear that you chose Michelins and I am pretty certain that you will be pleased with them! Being as I am a SoCal driver, I see very little snow unless we take a skiing trip up to Mammoth Mountain. So, once the snow weather sets in there, please keep us updated with your 'personal' experience with these Michelins. Your thoughts are important to me and most likely others, on here, interested in changing to new tires! Thanks again, Lance

As a Syracuse native with a Northern commute, and an ‘18 on 22s, I’m also waiting to hear feedback.

You dodged a bullet on the Pirelli’s. Mine came with new Pirelli AS Plus 3’s when I bought it last year. They were awful in the snow, I compared it to driving on ice skates. I repeatedly would have the rear end sliding out; one of which sent me across the median and into a ditch on the other side of the road. They could not handle any kind of snow above an inch; and if ice was involved it was even worse. (I had the same tires on an ‘18 Durango and they were lights out. So I’m guessing they just don’t play well with the size, weight balance, or 4WD design of the expedition vs the AWD of the Durango). We’re now 40k miles down the road from when I got it, and they’re severely worn, and showing cracking like a dry rotted tire on the outer tread.

I was always a Goodyear guy, but they didn’t have an option for my Durango. I’m just starting to really research for the Expedition. I’ve debated Nexen’s; my wife’s Wagoneer has those from the factory; and they have performed very well (minus a clear alignment issue on the front end - apparently quite common on Wagoneers/Ram 1500s).

But your feedback, especially with winter weather making its first showing this morning, will be greatly appreciated.

Binghamton here. I’ll update after the first snowfall we get. Believe me….I’m just as interested as everyone else on these, especially as they were a well-rated, expensive tire! lol

We got hit pretty good the last two days.

The ice skate like tires were very note worthy on the highway last night.

I’m really looking at the Michelin’s and the Goodyear Weatheready 2’s (they’re similar to the Goodyear tread we run on our cars at work, and they’re very tacky. Less mileage guarantee though).

Looks like I’ll be on a delay on the tires though, I think my transmissions CDF Drum has gone; so it’ll go to the transmission shop tomorrow. Unless there’s some crazy deal for the holidays and I just pre buy.

I wound up pulling the trigger on the Michelin’s. They get installed Friday.

Mopar is running a buy 3 get 1 for $1, so it was a hell of a deal. Plus there’s an active rebate for them too, not sure if it’ll go through, but I’m gonna give it a shot. Also throwing a set on the wife’s Wagoneer too.

That sounds like a wonderful deal, you got there! Good job there Maynard! I am pretty certain that you will be pleased with your new Michelins.

I don't think it was on this Expy tire thread, but I had written earlier that we had a new 2012 Expedition EL Limited that we bought new and it came from Ford w/ Perrelli Tires on it (don't remember the model name though). Never had any major problems with those Perrelli's' but they never seemed to ride very smoothly nor did they make you feel comfortable (handling wise) and especially so, when towing our 21' Day Cruiser boat. My wife mostly drove this 2012 Expy but in 2015, we and another couple decided to go to a NASCAR Race in Pheonix, AZ. I decided, 2 weeks before the trip, to put a new set of Michelins' on it before leaving on our AZ trip. The day after the new Michelins were installed on her Expy, my wife had driven 80 miles round-trip to a friends home in Chino, CA. She said it was like "driving a completely different vehicle". It rode so smoothly and handled like a slot car while cornering and going around freeway curves, too. Our friends were so impressed with how smooth it rode that they said they were going to buy an Expedition, when they got home. Which, they did. My wife isn't into the technicalities of cars so, when she excitedly commented on how much better the Michelins made the car ride and handle, I was impressed by that candid observation, Lance

I just put a set of the Pirelli Scorpion AS Plus 3 tires in 285/45R22 on my stealth. Pricing for 4 tires, mounted and balanced, was ~$920 before tax in Bergen County NJ. This was $300-$500 less than other shops and I've had my other car done this year, too. This model has rim protection, fyi.

$100 4-wheel alignment with before & after document.

So, I've had not had the opportunity to drive these tires in snow covered roads, but I've driven them on some pretty slushy roads. So far, I'm impressed with them. The traction has been great. I'll update again once I drive in some more adverse conditions.

I look forward to hearing about your Michelin performance when you're on Snow Covered Roads! Sounds good so far though. Lance
