What kind of driving do you do? What conditions do you encounter? On or off road? Tire choice depends on how you use your vehicle.
I use Firestone Destination LE2s and they're awesome, but they're a road tire. That's good for me in Memphis, but might not be the best for you in IA with the heavy winters you get.

I stand behind my Firestone recommendation. I've gone through two sets (about to switch them out again) and they've been great. Low noise, smooth ride, great traction in all conditions. 60K mileage, but I usually swap out by 55k to be safe. There's also usually a coupon for $40 off, sometimes more.

My 03 I picked up last spring has General Grabber HTS60 on it and they've been great and I got them at about 70% tread, they'd been on for 15k before I picked it up. I commute a mixed city/hwy..20/80 and they handle rain, snow, etc quite well. The best part? Extremely quiet, I get little to no noise from the tread pattern. If I keep this long enough to warrant replacement and still available another set will be installed. I'm in Indiana so similar weather to you.

On my 09 Limited EL I run Cooper SRX 275/55 R20 117Hs. They are American made and I demand excellence from my tires. I often have 8 passengers and luggage for vacations. I live in snow country(N. IL) and don't care to slow down if not necessary. The SRXs are great in snow,rain or dry conditions. I run them on my truck also. I run the 117H to maximize the performance and safety of my wonderful truck.

I like my Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLTs. Quiet on road, handle great but give a nice aggressive look to change the expedition from a "grocery getter" (according to a coworker). They also make a less expensive but still solid handling Discoverer AT3 4S. They have good ratings and are a little cheaper.

The Michelin LTX M/S LT275/65R18 tires on my 2013 ran 110k miles and still had some life left. Expedition definitely towed better with the LT tires.
I’ve had 4 Expeds since 2000 and all of them had the P series tires replaced with LT. No problem.

I have run Laufen and they wear well and are great for the price.
I have never had a tire wear as well as the LTX M&S ones. I have had to replace them due to cracking but that was after 6-7 years but I have had tires last longer with fewer signs or dry rot of checkering.
They are great tires though!
2012 EL Limited. I put on the Kumho Crugen HT51 a year ago. 10,000 miles and no complaints. It’s my wife’s “ferry the kids around” vehicle, so lots of start/stop/turn, etc., with little wear seen. They balanced out great, and from a stop to 90+, they are very smooth. They also track great. I did the brakes right before the new tires, and had a full alignment when they did the tires. Highway ride is noticeably quieter than the factory Goodyear’s (granted the old tires were well worn, if that makes a difference). I’d recommend highly, and would purchase then again 100%. Plus, the price was right, and it's a 70k mile warranty, which I believe is possible.

Michelin and BF Goodrich are top tier, then my secondary recommendations would be BridgeStone or Good Year. Cooper tires also are decent for more of a value tire, I had coopers on my XLT and they wore decent but got noisy. Others have loved them. I just replaced my Michelin LTX tires with new Michelins all over because I liked them so much. Great on road tire, decent in snow.

We also have a 2011. Ours is a Expedition EL Limited. Not sure how your winter tires are like, but here in the NE part of California we get some good amount of snow. The roads tend to be really icy due to the limited amount of sun the road gets due to the trees. We have been using Michelin Defender LTX tires. They are the newer version of the LTX M/S2'S. They get great traction in deep snow and decent traction on the ice. What I like about them is the tread pattern looks like a highway tire but due to the M/S rating, I dont have to switch them out in the winter. I've gotten great mileage on them and am on my second set. Tire rack gave them a great rating and I am not disappointed. I have them also on my 2004 F250 Super duty as well. They offer great traction on both wet and dry pavement. Since the new set doesnt have a lot of miles on them, I am unable to determine how they compare to the old version. They were also around the same price as other tires such as BF Goodrich and Bridgestone, but since I had experience with the Micheline's I stuck with them.
Whether or not you have to swap them out in the winter time is a matter of how they actually perform and personal choice. Don't put too much emphasis on that M&S and multi-season being too accurate. Some Brands and models of tires are great in snow and some just suck. Michelin are great tires but I have heard some complaints about the Defenders versus the original LTX MS. Not a ton so it could just be people who are resistant to change but I certainly know the original LTX M&S tires were some of the best you can buy.
