Rumbling Noise when turning

I have a 2003 Expedition E.B. 4x4. When I start from a dead stop, accelerate with some vigor and turn at the same time, I hear and feel a rumbling in the front wheels. Is this normal? It has 3000 miles. Does it have something to do with the 4x4?
any help would be appreciated.

Have the dealer check out the front clutch pack in the differential. There is a TSB for it.

Yep....take it in. Mine is in the shop now again at 9K miles getting the diff clutches changed yet again. There is now a "new" fix an updated one from the last revision. Hopefully the 3 time is a charm. Make sure your dealer gets you the latest fix.

How is your brake dust on the front wheels?

I've got my 2003 Expedition in the shop right now for a 5000 mile service and also because I too have the rumbling noise when turning at low speeds. I saw someone post that it felt like running over a cattle guard...I think that is the best way to describe it. Anyway...the dealer kept it overnight because they too felt the sensation...got it up on the rack and couldn't find anything. Does anybody know the exact TSB (and by the way, what does TSB stand for?) so I can pass this info onto my dealer. This is Phil Long Ford in Colorado Springs.

Just FYI,

Here is a list of current posted TSB's for the 03 Expedition. This info is courtesy of ALLDATA. The specific TSB you are looking for is 03-6-4 published in Mar 03. This will let the Ford Techs know what to look for and the fix action i.e. the clutchs in the differential. Good luck.

Just had the cluch packs replaced on my '03 at 18000 miles. Took the dealer all day, but it drives like new now. Dealer didn't give me a hassle either. Service manager drove the truck and before pulling out of the parking lot said it sounded like the rear diff clutch pack. He order the parts on a Monday and I brought the truck in on Thursday, took the shop about 8 hours to complete.

Has anybody had or heard of the same issue for 04 Expys? I thought it was rough pavement but it sounds like what everybody else is describing

Update to my question regarding 04 models. I found out from the dealer that 04 models do indeed have the clutch pack problem.

I must say, most of the warranty work I have had done is due to this forum and having the same experiences/symptoms with my Expedition. I only have 3100 miles on it and I have had the brake pads replaced, clutch packs replaced, air conditioner serviced (evac'd and refilled as it was low to begin with).

And a front tire replaced as it failed the ROAD FORCE TEST - I had them look at it as the steering wheel "shimmied" at highway speeds 65-70mph, and was really bad at 75-80. So, if you have a vehicle vibration or steering wheel shake, it may not be as simple as a balance or alignment.

I just bought a 1999 EB 4x4 and tonight, about one week into our relationship, I dropped it off back at the dealer for an appointment tomorrow regarding this vibration that I felt while driving at highway speeds the night that I bought it. I also felt it the next day but a lot less noticeable. Could this be the same clutch pack issue that you all have had w/ your '03 and '04 Expeditions? I hope not. I love it already and am hoping that it was just a figment of my imagination! : )

I got my Expy back yesterday and guess what the dealer said - "We recreated the noise and the vibration and know what the problem is!" They said the problem was the rear shocks - which are a problem - but they ignored the fact that I said the problem has only occurred on the highway at highway speeds and sounds and feels like I am going over rumble strips.
They wanted to charge me $140 (half of the normal price to replace to rear shocks - $280 !!!!) because I have a 50/50 warranty for 30 days even though I told them about the issue the day after I bought the truck. They also failed to tell me what my keyless entry code is as I asked them to do. :mad:

This is getting away from the original thread subject, but I had some experience with "rumbling" tires, and it may be what you have. Please check you tires for uneven wear and read below....

From a previous post, I said:

"This issue has been around for a LONG time. There are hundreds of posts on this on several Ford forums. The general response is that it is caused by poor tire quality.

I have a '98 EB that came with the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S tires. Actually, they sucked on several levels, but I had tons of problems with feathering, or is it cupping? Anyway, it simply destroyed the tires, and caused quite a lot of uncomfortable driving. This all happened in about 6k miles.

I went about correcting this issue methodically, and I am proud to say that it has been solved for 50K or so.

1) First I went in and had a complete alignment. Needed to have a camber kit installed, because i guess Ford didn't think it important to be able to change this (duh).

1a) Complete wheel balancing

2) Then, a few weeks later, I did it again, cuse the first one didn't help. This was at a local shop where I found they did great work!!

2a) Another complete wheel balancing

3) Brought it bake to the second shop again to make sure the alignment was still good. Reason being was the ride was better after the second alignment/balancing, but got worse.

THIS IS WHAT I NOTICED when I was under the truck watching them. There WERE NO WEIGHTS ON THE WHEELS. I knew they put them on, I saw them. I remember some loud bangs, but rocks will do that.

Solution: Tape weights..they hold

Next came new shocks and new tires, and I have not had an issue since. So, it may not apply, but I now make sure that the wheels get tape weights when rebalanced...plus it looks better."

any new info on this?? this is what i have been experiencing as well! I clicked on that tsb link but it took me to a main page. anyone ever find out if it was indeed a rear shock issue or tires?
