I took mine off and I want to take those faded piece of crap plastic boards off the sides of the doors and fenders but I'm nervous of what I might find underneath them. I'm sure they cut holes in the sides to hang them.

That's my plan as well! Get rid of the the plastic steps and get some nerf bars. But that's not until phase 2 of my build.

my steps are cheap ones from ebay.... going strong 4 years later and even holding up to the NY winters

Me too, and from what I can see I do think there are holes behind there. I am not a big fan of plastic on automobiles.

Use duplicolor plastic paint or plasti-dip. It will make the faded plastic look a lot better.

Ive taken off my running boards and the look is by far much better without them. People do complain about their absence but since I'm the one who drives it the most, its ok with me :) The only thing about taking them off is that you will realize how rusty your frame really is! I plan on a major de-rusting of my frame once its warm enough to do so!

I am taking my Westins off this weekend. On the passenger side they have completely rust through underneath. I got about 6 years out of them so not to bad I guess.

Looks good! I replaced mine with Westin pipes, very happy with them! I also sold my factory boards and hardware for $75, helped offset the cost of the steps.

Funny you mentioned WESTIN, Westin is actually the company Ford pays to build their factory steps that they put on their trucks and suv's, Just a bit of info lol who all knew that?

Took mine off and installed a set of amps for the wife... Don't even see them until you open the door.

I know my wife and kids would be a bit upset too if I took mine off. Did you actually gain any ground clearance? I've not looked on mine to see if they hang below the frame or not.

No extra ground clearance as the the stock running boards are above the frame. But the amps drop down about 6" below the stock boards when they're deployed and make it a lot easier to get in and out.

They are also tucked up tighter than the stock boards when they are up and you can't even see them.

If you go through my albums you'll see what I mean.
