I'm amazed he didn't fry one of the fusible links. I guess the plungers in the solenoids were pulling instead of pushing, keeping them activated. What's weird is why did they release sometimes? These electrical problems are always simple, once we stop being techs, and go back to parts changers, but reversing the part/connection. Good thing this wasn't an old Land rover. With those you beep the horn, and the radio turns on.

I would imagine it created a backfeed and/or turned the solenoid into a latching relay once the first start attempt was made.

Something like that, the best way I could describe it would be that I was sending power to the starter, and only the starter. There was no off switch.

Is it working right now? I'm assuming it is.
