I hope someone can help me out. My 97 Expedition 5.4L occasionally does not start. When you turn the key you can hear a click and sometimes the power locks lock/unlock. I thought it was the relay/solenoid on the firewall but after replacing it, it happened again, yet everytime it happens, I can start it up by jumping the terminals on the relay/solenoid on the firewall.
Can it be related to the giant fuses where the battery cables connect to?
If I keep trying it eventually it does crank over and start.
Thanks.

sounds like my problem. the lock/unlock is programming mode. it's used to program a new key, or new remote fobs. look at the manual for more info. it is just a result of trying to start 5 times in a row.

as for the no-start. Mine does the same thing randomly. sometimes it takes 1-3x to get it sometimes I can hit it for 10 minutes before it starts. i did catch it once where the relay clicked but the starter solenoid didn't catch. but I haven't had the time to investigate it. The problem did seem to get better after cleaning the battery terminals and the area where the wires go into the terminals.

check your PCM Power Relay Located in the Battery Junction Box (under hood) try swapping it with the trailer tow relay also check the spade lugs for any corrosion and clean them You can find the location of the relays in your owners manual If you don't have a manual you can download one from owners.ford .com
