Ash tray had to be emptied every other day in my dad's 57 dodge pickup. Two pack a day camel non filter. We not only survived with no seat belts, but no child proofing of house. You only stuck a fork in a wall socket once. Helmets for bicycles! Get real. Until 1991 when they made us wear helmets on motorcycles, many a time I didn't. Ah to be young and dumb!

I still drink out of garden hoses, my older brother can't, he lives 40 miles outside of Mexico city. My first driving experience 53 Pontiac chieftain wagon, made you appreciate cars of 60's and seventies. Even with 6 volt system, always started. Tough engine for the 50's, but slow, right before Pontiac's big horsepower v8 starting in 1955 and real fast after 57!

I think Chrysler changed from 6v to 12v in 1956 when my Dad bought a Plymouth (two tone: Charcoal and Red, of course). I'm guessing everyone else did about the same time. Never another Chrysler product in the family since then and only a smattering of GM cars (SS396, 442) long ago. Galaxies, Mustangs, a couple of Pintos driven nearly 200K each, and now Expedition.

Not sure about positive or negative ground. I've never run across positive ground on the cars I've worked on and was always surprised there were cautions on radios, etc.

Hudson and Nash used positive ground, might have been a few others. Those crazy Brits, were one of the few that thought it was the way to go, sorta like Edison vs Tesla. We know who won that battle. I know Gm made the switch to 12 volts in 1955, think Ford did too that year, anyone know for sure. I know Chrysler was first to market with electronic ignition. 1971 or 1972 I believe. Rolls Royce had 12 volts back in the twenties for US bound vehicles, I'd like to see Ford come to market with a hybrid or total electric Expedition with mountains of torque, like Dodge Diesel. 700 plus ft lbs of toy Towing power, that would sure make up for some of the past.

I used to nap on the rear deck of the family LTD or the Delta 88 on road trips.
That reminds me. My dad had a 61 VW Bug, we used to put 8 people in that thing and drive from Brooklyn NY to Stroudsburg PA, about a 2 to 2-1/2 hour drive. My Mom and dad up front. My aunt, two cousins and me in the back seat and my sister and youngest cousin in the space behind the back seat above the engine. With a 40 HP engine is used to slow down drastically going up hill on the highway and then pickup speed to make it up the next hill - good times - no seat belts.
