The Waze update is out, who is using it instead of the native navigation?

Are you ever on WiFi?? That’s a lot of data assuming it’s only one device and no video streaming.
Yes, on Wi-Fi at home, at SBUX, etc. I use my Expy for Uber & Lyft, as well as private car services, plus I own a restaurant meal delivery service, so I use LOTS of data. It's for two lines, both mine, but it amazes me how much data these apps use.

Worked great for me on a recent 300 mile trip. Crashed once, but I just launched it again on my iPhone. The frame rate is a little choppy, but so far no complaints.

why are you guys NOT on unlimited data? crazy. most carriers it is cheaper to move everything to unlimited. we have 4 phones and 4 tablets, all unlimited. i believe after all was said and done, we pay $30-$50 less than when we had 25GB for all to share.

that being said, on unlimited plan, the tablets arent truly unlimited. they cap at 15GB ea. phones are truly unlimited.

that being said, we max our tablets out frequently and i use at least 15GB per month on my phone for business. only video streaming i use it for is the occasional videos friends send, etc. occasional trek through facebook videos on a solo lunch break etc.

all of that being said, how the heck do you get waze to show up on the sync3? sync is updated to v3. carplay turned off. the only apps that show up are ford/alexa, pandora, and one other ford app. hit button that says scan for apps and that is all it finds. is there any setting in the app itself? im embarrassed to ask as i am in the technology business! but i will say, i only tried briefly and didnt research any instructions.

Make sure that Waze is updated and if you are using an iPhone make sure it is also plugged in. It should show up on the mobile apps section. The first time I tried mine it did t work either so I power cycled my phone and it worked the next time. I had a cable that has connection issues as well... it would charge fine but the apps wouldn’t load on sync so I switched cables and haven’t had that issue anymore either.

I am a regular Waze user and have used it extensively in the Expedition on Android auto.... Until a few days ago...

Odd thing happening. GPS location of my position not being picked up when Waze is running while plugged to the truck. If I unplug the phone, Waze is running fine.
Google maps locating correctly when plugged though.

Anyone having similar issues?

PROBLEM SOLVED.
Restarted & turned off power save mode on Samsung S8.
All good now.

Tired Waze on my XLT. It took a long time to connect initially - I restarted the process a few times because it just sat there "Connecting..." for minutes! Eventually it is to the point it will connect reliably. Works great once it's running.
As an aside, I had to turn off CarPlay to get it running (I'm using an iPhone). So is there any way to listen to podcasts while using Waze? I suspect not.
I think I'll switch to using the Sync3 built-in Nav as it's pretty good. Then I can listen to podcasts at the same time.

You do have to turn off CarPlay to use Waze. You can still listen to podcasts over Bluetooth or through the usb, you just have to run them on your phone not through the center-stack screen (like in the “olden days” before CarPlay). Using waze is really clunky (unfortunately) and that’s why I went back to using CarPlay and Apple Maps.

I’m curious though, aren’t you going to have the same problem if you use the sync 3 nav because you’ll also have to turn CarPlay off to do that? ...if CarPlay is on, Apple Maps is your only nav choice. Right? If not and there’s a way to run CarPlay and use the sync nav, PLEASE let me know as I’m actually a really big fan of the sync nav and would like to be able to use both.

Yes you're correct - when I started up Waze, it asked me what the default Nav should be (built-in Nav or Waze) and that made me think I could select built-in Nav or Apple Maps. But of course I tried it and it doesn't work that way. I'll try the Waze/Podcast combo next to see if I mind it. Note that for Waze to connect on an iPhone, it must be connected via USB (bluetooth apparently only works for Android?) - this from the Owner's Manual.

Yeah I don’t understand the dislike for the native nav. It sends the turn by
turn to the HUD which is nice. Apple maps is bad, the only thing I use it for is to add a business to my contact list if I need to, it populates name, numbers, addresses, website..... all that stuff.

I am impressed and pleasantly surprised with/by the native nav. I will say that while Apple maps was incredibly bad when it came out, I really don’t have much to complain about anymore. It may be because I live in the middle of a major metropolitan area, but I honestly haven’t noticed a marked difference between it and Waze. My only complaint would be that it sometimes tells me about a turn too late, but I’m rarely using voice guided directions, so it’s a minor quibble. I thought I would miss Waze more than I do.

And I love how when I get in my truck Apple has a pretty good idea of where I want to go already (work every morning, I take the kids to school every Friday so it knows that on Friday morning when I get in I’m not going to work first but gives me a map to their school, church when I fire it up Sunday morning etc) and shows an overview map of that suggested route without me touching anything.

Whole point being: if you haven’t used Apple maps since it’s disastrous rollout, try it, you may be surprised. Again, this may be because I live in the middle of dallas...it may be a lot worse in more rural areas.

I do notice the notifications for my usual destinations and the time to get there when I get in the car and that’s neat, that’s usually as far as I go with it though. How would you compare Apple maps to google maps? That’s usually the one I go to when I need to use a map on the phone but I never use either for turn by turn, that’s always the native nav since I’ve gotten this new vehicle, before it was Waze and a Garmin unit.

I still prefer Google Maps if I’m looking for something, i.e. a pizza place around me. And I prefer Waze for driving because of its hyper-accurate travel/arrival time (and Waze is owned by Google so they’re one and the same). But 99% of the time when I’m in the car, I know where I’m going and I just want to know my traffic along the way and how long it might take me to get there. For that purpose, Apple is perfectly sufficient and really convenient (for the reasons I posted earlier and because it’s part of the wonderful convenient CarPlay). I also like that Apple Maps will show your progress along the route without giving you turn-by-turn (ETA Only v Guidance).

I am new to this car play stuff. When using car play, what is the best way to access the fm stations, right now going out of CarPlay back to the ford screen, feels clunky to be doing it that way.

As an avid waze user, I got it going in the expy the other day and loved it. I find the native app in the expy to already be severely out of date (like when it shows me driving in the middle of a lake (on I35) - when I’m on a bridge that has been open for a year)

The best way I've found so far to get back to the SYNC3 menu from CarPlay is to hit the "equalizer" button under the screen. Then you can select which screen you really want to get to.

It's annoying that CarPlay doesn't have a "SYNC3 menu" button somewhere...

I was excited to try Waze, and I got it working, but it's very unreliable for me. Many times I plug my phone in, and the screen just sits there "Waiting for connection" or something like that. I find that I have to go into the phone and manually start Waze, and sometimes unplug it and plug in again to get Waze to appear on the screen.

I've also had Waze just quit for no apparent reason.

How do you get Waze started? Do you have it running on your phone first, then plug in USB? Or are you using Android? Maybe it's more reliable than iPhone in this respect...

LoL at some of the comments here

I use Waze but rarely, I fire it up when I'm in unfamiliar territory to get the speed limits and any speed traps I might not see coming, otherwise I haven't really figured it out much but unlike Google maps it doesn't seem to give me the option of alternative routes and Waze sometimes randomly suggests visiting a retailer of some kind that's way out of my route

I’ve done it a few times now, but I normally start Waze then plug my phone (iPhone) in. Once I had the waiting..., I just unplugged/and plugged it back in.

If I’m driving, I usually have Waze running. For 3 main reasons... 1 for traffic, 2 the ETA, and 3 for the speed traps. Even though Waze is owned by Google, with its real time traffic, the navigation is usually better... usually (sometimes it does recommend some stupid turns)
