So I heard what I thought to be the beginning of rod knock. I was about due for an oil change anyway so I changed the oil. Sure enough there were a lot of metal shavings in the oil so knock my best guess. That means once this engine goes I will need a replacement. How much would a shop charge me to install a rebuilt engine? I heard 4500. A rebuilt engine costs about 2300-2500 from what it seems.

I'm talking full cost though. After labor and any parts they may need to order. Obviously I can't get an exact number but I'm looking for a ballpark + or - 300 bucks maybe.

I can't rebuild it myself, no time. I work a minimum of 50-58 hours a week and I take 12 hours of college classes in top of that every week and then have a girlfriend to deal with on top of all that lol.

Thank you!

In case it helps it just got all new exhaust manifolds so that wouldn't be an issue. They are literally not even 6 months old and the newest just got put on a week ago.

How can we answer that kind of question? We are not doing the work or know the condition of your Expy and replacement engine.

The replacement engine would be rebuilt. There has to be some sort of average cost out there. I can find it for other vehicles, just not mine so it obviously can be ballparked. Like I said, it doesn't need to be a spot on number.

I'd start calling shops if I were you. Because even if I had a number, it would be for a shop local to me- it might be much different where you are.
Really? I didn't know prices varied that much. Would I need some kind of specialist shop or would a normal shop like the kind I go to to have manifolds and AC done do a swap?

I always check here first, http://www.fordparts.com, because I know the OEM is expensive and I can have a worst case scenario idea of how much I'll need. Without knowing anything about your engine, oil cooler/no oil cooler, a 5.4L long block is $3815.49 and it goes down from there. You now have a worst case start point should your engine be beyond economical repair and can not be rebuilt. You just need labor estimate, plus a/c recovery and service and any additional parts.

$3500 for reman engine
$1000 or prolly more for labor

if it was me, I'd get a used engine and put it in myself
I did my 98 engine swap for less than $500 total
it is a lot of work though

Used engines are a tremendous gamble. That being said, you might look around for a low miles rebuilt motor. Theirs a labor guide online that can get you into ballpark as to what shops labor charges would be.. If you've got a service writer at a shop near you, ask him or her what the total hours Mitchell or equivalent gives for hourly total. My guess is 12-15 hours labor. Avg labor in the U.S is $100.00 per hour. Some more some less. So $1500.00 plus $3300.00 to $4000.00. 5k if you go remanufactured. Get a quality full service shop that knows Ford well to do this job. You don't want a hack r&r ing your motor. Check the shop out through better business bureau and others to be sure they have a good rating and few complaints. Let us know how it turns out.

Do u know anyone who's highly inclined in auto mechanics? That person can be your best bet for advice and he/she might be willing to do the swap for far less $$$

First post here, new to Forum.
I had a good experience with buying a Jasper remanufactured engine a few years ago. I bought a Jasper 6.9L diesel engine for my F-250 after original motor blew at 300K. I had it installed by a Ford truck dealer, and the engine AND labor was warrantied by Jasper for 1 year. Looking at the Jasper site now, Complete gasoline engines now have 3 year/100K PARTS + LABOR WARRANTY.

I'm glad I went with Jasper because that engine developed a crack in the block near a freeze plug within that year. Heintzelman Ford and I filed a claim with Jasper and sure enough, Jasper paid for the removal, re-install, and replacement engine all at their cost. The replacement engine lasted another 100K with me until I sold the truck years later.

When considering replacing an engine, you need to determine if saving money on the front end will really be worth it or spending a little more for the peace of mind.

Especially with Expeditions and their resale value, would it be better to replace the entire vehicle with a good used Expedition or are you planning on keeping your baby regardless of whatever it's worth? A $2-3000 investment for engine will not increase the resale value at all.

See their you go, blue book high value for a low mileage 97 - 99 model is under $3500.00. Well I guess it depends on the sentimental value, and what kind of shape the rest of SUV is in. It's like rebuilding a classic car, you never get back what you put in. Yet people do restorations all the time.

This is true, but look at our members that bought worn out 250k plus models that a had a bazillion problems. Maybe our forum members get lucky like I did and buy a 15 year old expedition with 64k on it. Always look for a low mileage car or truck. I've tried the other way, high mileage, real cheap. But no matter what you change, you still have a worn out, squeaky, rattly SUV. It takes a lot of searching, but the low mile ones are out there. You might pay a little more up front, but it's worth it in the long run. Always better to put on your own miles, than wonder how the past owner drove, or maintained your vehicle. It's always worked for me. I've owned over 40 cars and motorcycles in my past, the low mileage ones, have always been the nicest.

I purchased a 98 Eddie with 138k miles on it for 650.00. Rust free Florida truck! With the understanding of rebuilding it. In the process of motor swap from a 98 5.4l to a 2001 5.4l. More bourse power and torch. I have redone the complete interior and suspension brake system exhaust Ac system rear end and tranny. Last is paint. Will have a total of 14k into it and have a new truck with no payments.
