I am going to change the transfer case fluid and should have looked the other day when I had it on the hoist, but didnt...I know it has a fill point and has a drain point....my question is has anyone done this and how hard is it to get the fluid back in? angle, special tubing, etc....

1. Remove the top fill plug first... Just incase you can't open it, you'll still have fluid to drive where you can get things to open it.
2. Remove the drain plug, and drain TC.
3. Close drain plug.
4. Fill with Transfer Case Fluid. I use Royal Purple MAX ATF without issues. Kinda pricey though... ***
5. Stop when fluid starts to dribble out the fill hole.
6. Close Fill plug.

That's it!!! :)

** inorder to get the fluid in, I use a quart bottle with a pointy thing up on top.. Its slow but it works... I also am open for another method..

I cant remember what I used for mine, but your parts store will be able to tell you which one though. It takes just under two quarts to fill the transfer case. I took a lid with a nipple off a bottle of gear oil and then put a small piece of 3/8 hose on the end of that to put in the whole to keep it clean.

Otherwise, its pretty simple like mindgame said, and it will run out of the fill hole when its full, so make sure to change it on flat ground.

You need

-2 quarts of mercon v
-a good funnel or a jumbo plastic syringe which is what I used
-a 3/8" ratchet

two tips, make sure the fill plug comes out before you even touch the drain plug and park it on level groung if you didn't already know :)

Have you guys had any issues with using Mercon V/LV? I have seen warnings specifically not to use anything other than Ford XL-12 transfer case fluid. I checked the shop manual and it specifies XL-12 as well.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread I have a 2014. Used search.

Valvoline makes a compatable fluid. Ford says do not use their MERCON V in transfer cases.
