Hey guys, just got myself a used 98 w/ the 5.4 Triton - Eddie Bauer Edition.

150k, 4x4, the whole thing.

I upgraded to this from a 96 4x4 Explorer with the 4.0 OHV. This is a huge step for me.

Had a CEL @ test drive, owner said it was for a coil, didn't remember which one. upon reading it later, it comes up bank 2 lean.

it idles smooth and drives great, but there is this vibration when it is at anything but idle, including revved up RPM's when in park. We threw in a PCV since that was the cheapest start, sprayed around some carb cleaner to try and find a vac leak but nothing changed. I wasn't really expecting it to, just being diligent.

It was in in some kind of an accident but the truck drives straight, aside from a slight pull to the right, which I am chalking to bald tires on the front. I got the truck for the right price @ $1350.

I am definitely going to do a full tune up. I see the coils on ebay for like, $60 for a set of 8. Anyone had any issues? I see lots of good amazon reviews on them too. Lets face it, all the stuff thats in aftermarket stores, all comes from china anyway.

SO

Thoughts on the roughness? It could possibly be missing but no code for it.
Thoughts on the 8 pack of coils?
Are these known to shoot the plugs out or did that start happening later on?

Thanks guys. Its like driving a space ship compared to my Explorer. I LOVE IT.

I am on the hunt for a passenger front fender and new passenger front door as well. Previous owner has prier the metal out on both to keep the door operational.

Congrats on the Expedition.

If you've been reading about this truck you will know there is a notorious vac leak problem associated with the pcv tube elbow located on the back of the intake manifold. You can locate it by feel and will know by touch if it is failing. If the one on your engine has never been replaced it is due. You could have easily missed this with the carb cleaner check you did.

There is good information on COPs in this thread: http://www.expeditionforum.com/f42/ignition-coils-22501/

Pay attention to the COP boots and dielectric grease comments.

Get yourself a cheap code reader if you can't afford an expensive one. This tool will be invaluable to you.

Thank you.

I will read that.

Easier to see the PCV elbow once the intank shroud is removed?

I ordered one of the bluetooth deals that will sync with my phone. Best code reader ever.

Go with Motorcraft plugs and use a torque wrench and torque to specs approx 15 ft lbs. If you don, t change the coils at least install new boots . Get the torque pro app for use with the blur tooth OBD ll device. I, ll send you some info on a good ford workshop manual on DVD later. also nice to have is a good DVM and circuit tester

I bought the eBay plugs...

Ebay plugs? I've used the Ebay COP's before but MC spark plugs ain't that expensive...

By all means do the COP and plug change if so inclined, but don't forget the lean condition that likely indicates a vac leak. There are other places to look, but the pcv elbow is a common source.

Good to know there is someone local I can talk to for help.

I hope this PVC cures my highway speed RPM surge issue.

After you fix the leak and eliminate the misfires you have, try adding Lucas Injector Treatment when you fill up with gas. This additive has nothing to do with fixing the problems you reported, but I swear by this stuff. Two or three times per year I add 12oz to a full tank before a long trip.

Just about all additives have their detractors for myriad reasons. I'm not recommending the Lucas product as a repair; it's a maintenance procedure. Try it after you have tuned up your Expedition and see if you recognize a difference.

Replaced PCV Hose with Stealership OEM part. Runs better than it did with it broken (broke the hose replacing the elbow), but the RPM surges and missing still remains at highway speeds. My eBay Coils will be arriving today. Does anyone know the torque spec for the plugs?

Snap shot of my Torque Pro app reading my OBDII computer on the Exp. I floored it, just for ***** n gigs
