Just wondering what size tire I can put on my 2011 Expy? Currently all stock with 275 55 r 20. I'm considering getting steel rims to put snow tires on. Just thinking it might be cheaper to go to a 18 or even 17" rims. I've been told I have to stay with the same diameter wheel otherwise I can wreck the tranny. Is that true?

you can go with 17" wheels and 265/70 17 tires. that would be your cheapest route.

i just put brand new blizzak studdless snow tires this season to replace my 3 season old firestone winterforce studded.

The only way that would be true is if you had different sizes from front to back. In that situation, the larger wheels would turn slower than the smaller wheels (trans/xfer case tries to rotate all at the same speed), and this would only be a problem if the truck were operating in 4WD or A4WD. Plenty of people run larger diameter on all 4 corners and trans is just fine including myself. It is going to be more stress on the trans of course, but not enough to cause huge concern.

With tires it is more about tread pattern than size. Though I am a firm believer that wider tires within reason are better snow tires. Everyone has varying opinions on that though.
