I found that I had play in both front wheels despite the PO stating that the bearings were both less than a year old. the issue turned out to be the retaining bolt had backed out some due to the cotter pin being bent outbard rather than being bent over the retainer. I Don't know how common this is but I am going to be checking mine each oil change.

Did you tighten it to the next opening? The pin was still in place and holding it right? You may want to use a torque wrench too to make sure its on enough. They take like 190 ft/lbs if I remember right, but I would check

I didn't use a torque wrench. I just tightened them so that the pin could go in to properly hold the bolt in one place. I had my uncle helping/guiding me as I still get into places I am learning. He suggested to just tighten them to remove play then go a bit tighter and put the cap and pin back in. I will see about getting them to spec if I notice any play develop.
