Just did this today. $5 permit and our pick of trees less than 12' tall in the entire Deschutes National Forest. Great family activity!

My Expedition is my work vehicle, but we take my wife's Suburban to a tree farm on the side of a mountain. There are lots of paths and trails. We usually make a couple loops around everything (with branches slapping the windows) and up and down a few hills before we actually start "looking" for a tree. This year, I made my wife do the driving. I told her she should know how, plus I hurt my back and didn't feel like driving.
