Why is it that Ford TPM Sensors won't work between years ?

I've encountered this twice now. once on my 2021 Transit when trying a set of 2023 stock wheels and now on my 23 Expy Limited when replacing the wheels with stockers from a 24 Expy Timberline. In both instances the vehicle simply won't relearn the newer TPM sensors.

Has anyone found a solution other than buing new generic sensors ?

I'm dropping from 20's to 18's on the Expy so I can have my tire guy pull the sensors from the 20 and reuse them. I'm looking for an additional set of 18's for my winter / summer setup though so next set is new sensors unless there is a solution for this.

I think they work on different radio freq. I know replacements on web sites show different freq

There are multiple frequency ranges I found. I think the issue goes deeper thoigh. It seems like the on board computer learns an id code for each sensor. Makes sense as it needs ro know Front Left from Front Right and etc...

What doesn't make sense to me is that apparently if there is an id code present in one of the positions putting the car into 'relearn' doesn't allow for an over ride of the code. So what 'relearn' means in Ford parlance is kinda of a mystery to me.

Not really a mystery... it means "take it to a stealership, so they can ERASE the existing codes, install new sensors, and reprogram the sensor module with the codes from the new sensors"

All for ONLY $500-600.....

Either that, or buy a high-end programming tool & do it your self with ForScan, but it's still gonna cost ya at least $400 for the tool + the sensors + the cable/adapter + the software license....

I put wheels from a newer F150 (2023?) on my 2019 Expedition, said new wheels had TPM's in them, I just needed the inexpensive Ford TPM reset tool...

(thats an aftermarket one, the 'real' Ford one is $35 or so)

and all 4 TPMS work great after following the reset procedure, which is something like...
1. Make sure all tires are inflated to the vehicle specifications.
2. Make sure ignition button is OFF then press and release the brake pedal.
3. Hold the ignition button down for 2 seconds, release it, and then tap the button once. The vehicle should be OFF. Hold the ignition button down for another two seconds, release it, and then tap the button once.
4. Hold the ignition button down for two seconds again. The vehicle should be in RUN mode, engine off.
5. Press and release the brake pedal.
6. Tap the ignition button once so the vehicle is OFF.
7. Hold the ignition button down for 2 seconds, release it, and then tap the button once. The vehicle should be OFF. Hold the ignition button down for another two seconds, release it, and then tap the button once.
8. Hold the ignition button down for two seconds again. The vehicle should be in RUN mode, engine off.
9. The horn should sound letting you know the vehicle has entered into TPMS relearn mode.
10. Place the top of the FORDTRIGGER on the sidewall of the driver's side front tire in the location of the valve stem.
11. Press the button of the FORDTRIGGER tool. The vehicle's horn will sound letting you know the sensor has been learned.
12. Once the horn sounds, move on to the passenger side front tire and repeat the process. Each tire should only take 30 seconds or less.
13. After the passenger side front tire has been learned, continue on to the passenger side rear tire and finishing with the driver's side rear tire.
14. You may now turn the ignition to OFF. If the horn does not sound, the sensors were learned successfully. If the horn sound twice, then the process must be repeated because there was a malfunction.

Hey there…wondering if this tool will work with 2024 expedition.

I have method wheels and sensors from 4wheelparts that my local tire shop cannot get programmed.

well, the Ford programmer thing is just for Ford sensors. I dunno what Method wheels are, or what sensors 4wheelparts sold you.
