I click the switch on my 97 expedition xlt 4.6 for 4wd auto or 4x4 but it doesn't seem to engage, although the dash lights work (except for the low range light; that one doesn't seem to light up). The truck's 4x4 doesn't engage! What could this be. We just got plenty if snow and now I'm screwed...

There is a electronic module on the transfer case that engages your 4x4...this is a common problem....also check the fuse.

So...... Why wouldn't 4low work on dash if it lights up when i start the truck, as part of dash lights... What powers that thing?

The electronic control module mounted on the transfer case...if it dont light, it may not be engaging.

I will check the fuse when I get home. Is it in Dash or Under Hood?
Also, does the GEM module have anything to do with this?

Lastly, where can I get a replacement for that transfer case thing?

Before you go buy a part you may not need....slow down and look under neath the truck and make sure you just dont have a corroded connection...

The transfer case motor is the most likely culprit. If it's original.... it's probably bad. But still check the vacuum actuator on the axle and the vacuum solonoids on the firewall by the battery.

Have you given it some gas to make sure the front wheels spin? My center axle disconnect lever froze up and wouldn't engage the front wheels. It had to be wire brushed, lubed and worked free.

It seems to be the original one. If it works with 4low, I assume that the actuators are working, however, the transfer case motor doesn't seem to be sending the signal for 4 high or autoAWD... unless there are separate fuses for each setting...
