The prices of these seat upholstery kills me. Rip OFF!
We should be getting real leather or at least leatherette from China for 30-35 bucks.

The ones sold by The Seat Shop for about $10 more are far better quality. They have a video on their site showing different manufacturers' leather and comparing how they cut corners... I put theirs on my truck and while it was a lot of work, they are excellent a year later... Look for their 10% off sales.

This is all true but all of them are WAY overpriced. You can get an entire leather jacket with more material and work to make for 59-79.
They just aren't asking the right companies to make these.

The driver seat cover bottom was replaced twice under the new-car warranty on my 2015 Ford Expedition Limited 4x4, purchased new. The leather began separating on both replaced covers. I have found the seat cover quality to be very poor on my Ford - with the upgraded Limited interior.

These are cut and sewn in Texas. Maybe you can find the Chinese prisoner who makes the jackets to sew up a seat for you, so you don't have to pay an American enough to feed his kids.

These are cut and sewn in Texas. Maybe you can find the Chinese prisoner who makes the jackets to sew up a seat for you, so you don't have to pay an American enough to feed his kids.

I have another way to spin it without snarky attitude... IF there was competition and prices plummeted to a 60 bucks or so (let's agree they have HUGE margin over cost after materials esp if not real leather) people would actually start replacing them. I would do almost every driver bottom seat I've ever owned and probably rear seat too especially pass rear on rear buckets.
As of now I have NEVER purchased one and never had a seat re-upholstered in my life. I have multiple times bought a used seat from junk yard.
IF once again the new seat material was cheap many people would buy them instead of cheap $10-$30 seat covers.
Volume goes way up and in the end they could make just as much money, maybe more.... AND since some would want new covers but unable to or not wanting to install themselves, a completely new market of installers could be like the guys who tint windows at home.
That feeds their kids too.
So before you blast my factual statement that they are very expensive compared to many other hand sewn leather/pleather items.... consider other possibilities and situations that could occur.

Back in the late 70's I worked for one of the first self service shoe stores. It was started in the late 50's. We sold work boots, dress and athletic shoes. Our markup was only about 25% vs 45-50 for full service stores. Our side was Men's shoes, and we made a killing. Avg profit was $1,000000. Per year. On top of that we were a Union store that paid well. No commission crap to worry about. So you can do both, make a lot of money, keep it here in the U.S. and buy mostly American products for resale. These days you just have to be more creative, and not be a vulture or pirate when it comes to profits.

Your last two comments are perfect examples of the thought process that has brought American manufacturing to its current state! I don't suppose you feel the same way about whatever service you provide in your current profession. Do you?

When employers don't have to worry about providing a "living wage" its easy to undercut their competition. When entire industries (from material manufacturing through final sales) have this benefit you get poverty on the scale of China and India.

There's always an excuse for bad behaviour it just depends on what "spin" you use for the excuse.
