What Ford engine do they use? Trying to think what engine Ford makes that would work in marine application, 6.2L V8 from the Super Duty?

It’s the 6.2 from the F150 raptors. Similar to the super duty 6.2 with different cams from what I understand.

Great engine, what’s the redline on that in a boat? In the trucks they’ll shift right at 6 grand.

its more than just different cams...Mercruiser gets the engine and takes all the internals out, and puts in all forged stuff, better balancing, etc... Your cruising RPM is probably around 4800 to 5000 RPM and max R's when running full throttle is probably around 6500, and you can run that for an extended period of time. There isn't a "stock" engine that can take that from the factory. Marine engines may be the same block as a car engine, but the internals aren't the same. Just letting you know.

I wasn't a huge fan of mercury on the sterndrive end, good inboards and outboards though. I liked the OMC Cobra units.....they finally made a good product and went out of business shortly after. Was a nice durable design and changing the impeller was the easiest I’ve ever done....ah well. Quite beefier than the comparable Mercruiser Alpha One. I still have two Cobra drives sitting on stands in storage.

Many of those Cobra sterndrives were also behind a Ford engine. OMC used Fords 5.0, 5.8, and 7.5L 460 engines behind their products. In fact Ford and the marine industry were defunked for years after the demise of OMC. It seems they’ve just got back in the game now.

My engines max rpm is 5300 and the manual states not to run over 4000 for an extended period of time. We usually cruise at about 3700 rpm.

there is NOTHING better than an OMC cobra drive!!


Our old boat had a 350ci with a OMC drive... Four Winds commonly used Ford engines too, along with Liberator boats

Got the WD hitch all setup and adjusted on our new Mallard M312

Update: Just got back from our first weekend trip. Towed great considering it's size. Almost zero sway and it handled very nicely. Didn't stress the Ecobeast powertrain as much as I expected. Very very happy with the whole setup.

I took the 17 out for it's first real trip with my trailer. It towed beautifully. I left all the adjustments where I had them from my 07 and decided when I got back to recheck all the settings because it seemed to have a little too much tongue weight. I ended up tightening up the WDH levers when I got home a little and found it towed much better.

Maiden Voyage with the Scout Trailer. I just picked up this 2015 XLT EL in June for Towing Scouts and Trailers. Fits 8 and pulls the troop's big trailer. It only had the Class IV towing package, but I added in the Ford Brake Controller and we wired up the 4/7 Pin connector and mounted it on the receiver. It towed well.







When we wired up the 7 pin connector, there wasn't a lead on the wiring harness for the "Power" connection. So the lights in the trailer don't light up. So I need to get that hot. Is that pin hot on the "Heavy Duty" towing package?

Added another Cobra to the collection yesterday, picked up a 20 foot Four Winns with the Expedition. 5.4 didn’t even feel it back there. This ones in good shape, trailered it’s whole life. Original medallions still in tact.

I really miss owning a boat, especially a OMC drive. Ironically, yesterday cleaning out the garage I found my repair manual for OMC.

I never posted the boat in the water after launch. She’s still chalky despite my polishing and waxing. It’s going to need the high speed orbital and 3M Super Compound next spring. The little buffer didn’t cut the mustard.

Bought my '14 Limited in June 2019, and a few weeks later towed a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix on a flatbed from Illinois to Texas.

Pulled beautifully.

Thanks! Still a long way to go. It’s got a Chevy 4.3......I’ve taken some dimensions....a Chevy 350 may be in its future. Boat is very solid, stringers and bulkheads are all dry etc....I just need to get that hull to shine.

Don't forget the bottom end of a "standard" 350 isn't the same a marine engine. Boat engines turn alot more RPM for an extended period of time vs a car engine, just to let you know in case you didn't know??

Years ago we bought a 21' Sunbird with a bad 305 in it, and put in a mild built 350 and propped it and picked up around 9 MPH, and then bought a Rinker 23' with a bad 454, I had built a 496 for it with some serious HP(around 550) and re propped it, the Damn thing was wickedly fast, stock was suppose to be around 50 MPH, after the getting it done it went 68 MPH on a radar gun. I miss boating... That was a total sleeper!
