Yes … bit of a different subject but related. All the government MPG fuel economy (not HP) testing is done with "premium fuel" .. so if you use regular fuel for your day to day driving you will always achieve less MPG (in a vehicle that can take advantage of premium fuel).

MY 2019 owners manual says 87 octane but, for best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer.

There is a difference between minimum and recommended. Recommended is Premium.

Yes, EB Motors will run on 87, but they are tuned for 93. Run less than 93, the KR’s increase, which causes the timing to be pulled even under light load on 87. Pull timing, and you get less power.

I don’t know this by guessing or reading forums but MANY hours of logging using my HP Tuner MPVI2 on both my 16 Edge(about 75% of those hours), and my 17 Expy. My Edge is running the highest E content tune in the country for that platform with the Stock Fuel pump. That is E70. Lot’s of experience in this area.

SO MUCH misinformation out there in regards to what these motors need and run best on.

Want the numbers Ford published for you EB powered vehicle, run 93, it is as simple as that!

The SAE J1349 standard If it hasn’t changed recently is 87-97 octane for premium. I ran 88 ethanol free gas and 85 regular in my 16 EB and it hated it. No math, dyno or study needed. It was that obvious.

Yep! Ethanol free is the WORST thing you can put in these modern Turbo Motors. The more Ethanol the better within reason. The increased Octane, and the evaporative cooling both help to decrease knock, and therefore prevent any timing from being pulled. I am known to add a few gallons periodically of E85 to the Expy, using my 93 tune. Basically taking it in the realm of E15/E20. Runs AMAZING!

My Edge is a whole different Motor on E70! Gas MPG is down, but per Gallon total cost is 25 cents less than 87. Amazing power, and my cost per mile is about a wash. LOVE IT!

You can still get it in some places. Tracks, both drag and road racing typically have it also. It is a fortune though.

E85 is 108!

Expy can’t at full strength with the stock pump. Can’t flow fast enough.

It can definitely handle E30 with a tune to take advantage of it, probably even E50. Not currently tuning 2nd Gen 3.5TT for E, so not sure what the limit would be.

I sure wish someone had data on the standard eco-boost. In the mean time, I'll note see your marketing website (which only specifies "premium fuel") and raise you page 16 of the 2018 marketing brochure, which has no footnotes on the output of the standard Ecoboost but does have footnote 4 against the "Platinum Series". Footnote 4 is as follows "Horsepower and torque ratings achieved with 93-octane fuel."...

you guys drive me crazy. a ******* contest starts over which octane is the "right" octane to use, according to Ford; three of you refer to Ford recommendations, and totally blow by that Ford recommends different octanes for 3 different model years. how surprising.

any manufacturer will recommend differing octane for different criteria - model year, engine, driving use, and possibly others. Please try comparing apples to apples before whipping out the machetes, guys.

Ford EB Motor Power ratings are based on 93 Octane fuel.

Again, I partially don’t give a crap what the Ford documentation says. I have seen the Data with my own eyes.

Even if you haven’t look at the article I posted from Car and Driver. That is in Black and White from a source that makes their living testing vehicles.

Notice, I am not saying ALL motors. I am specifically referring to Ford EB motors because that is what I have experience with.

Want the rated performance in a Ford powered by an EcoBoost Motor, run 93, or 91 if that is all you have available. It is pretty simple!

Huh, my 16 Edge, 17 Expy, 15 Expy, and the above referenced manual from an 18+ Expy all say the same thing.

Minimum 87, recommended 91+.

They say 91+, because 91 is the highest some places of the Country can get.

Actually says “91 or Higher”. Again because 93 can’t be had in all parts of the Country.

then 87 octane is just fine, according to Ford

I just didnt want somebody thinking they NEED to run premium
and spending money that they might otherwise need for BEER, that would be a tragedy

I think that’s completely fair and accurate. If you are comfortable with less than the full performance potential, regular octane is 100% acceptable.
