Need More Chip Keys

My first post and first chip key vehicle, and hope it's my last.
2004 EB Expedition . Came with 2 keys and fobs but at my age and what's around us I want to give 2 neighbors/friends a spare car and house key. But can't find any local shop that'll provide key for less than $70.
Learned years ago never feed the always hungry car dealer and local lock shops need to make money but retail Ford 5918997 keys (seems to be recommended number) run about $9 - $15 each. Sure, their programming equipment costs along with their labor.
I talked with a key maker employee about making a brass key for the door if I lock my chip key inside the car and the door access keypad doesn't work (haven't found the master code yet) or battery is stone dead. He said sure they could do that but thought if I ever used the brass key in the ignition it would not start of course, but also the security system might think it was a theft attempt and disable ignition.
I watched a few YouTube videos on programming keys, seemed straight forward enough but if programming fails might the car laugh at me and lock up? I'm really confident trying it which is why lock shops seem to charge what the market will bear.

Your door keypad master access code will be on a sticker on the security module, which is located above the fusebox over on the passengers kick panel. Take a bright flashlight and look up above the fusebox. It'll be a 5 digit number on the sticker. Larger than other numbers anywhere on the module. If you get a transpondered (H84 or "S" stamped key...) key(s) for your Expy and have it cut, you should be able to easily program it to your PCM module using the appropriate procedure. Give it a shot.

Thanks for the info. So if I try the key program procedure (on/off with both keys, etc.) is there a distinct message that it worked or didn't. I'm still going on the info (rumor?) that the car might think someone is trying to steal it and disable the ignition.

The security LED on top of the dash will light up for 3 seconds if the key has been accepted. Put the Expy in the shade or something so you can see if the security LED lights up steady for 3 seconds when you do the procedure.
The Gen1 and Gen2 Expy uses a 40 bit transponder key. Sometimes referred to as an H84 or "S" key.


2004 Ford Expedition Key Programming



You must have 2 original keys that start your engine to perform this procedure. If you only have one working key or none at all it must be programmed by a dealer or locksmith! Your New third (unprogrammed) key must also be cut prior to performing this procedure.

Please Note: If one of your keys is a cloned key from a hardware store this procedure will NOT work. This procedure requires original programmed keys.
1. Insert an existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (just shy of starting the car Without cranking the engine) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay in ON position for at least one second.
3. Remove the existing key and WITHIN TEN SECONDS, insert a second working key and turn to ON and then back to OFF. Ignition must be on for at least one second but no more than ten seconds. Remove key.
4. Insert the New (unprogrammed) key before twenty seconds have elapsed and turn to ON. Leave it in the ON position for at least one second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate the new key has been successfully programmed.

For those who do not have 2 original keys: These keys can NOT be programmed at hardware stores like Ace, Lowes, Walmart, & Home Depot. They must be programmed by an automotive locksmith or dealership.

I bought two keys off Amazon and programmed them using the same instructions that Hamfisted posted, super easy.
I got my keys cut at Home Depot, the lady that helped was confused at first cause she didnt know how to bill it, she ended up just charged me for two ordinary "dummy" car keys.

Thanks, good to know. My Home Depot is currently in Corona mode, shorter hours and only allowing 100 in at a time. Need to time my visit carefully.

EBAY sells blank Ford PATS II(S2) keys for around $8. You can have them cut at any place, that cuts keys. Valu Home center cut mine for free. You can add additional fobs and keys yourself, but must have 2 working keys.

I just did this. If you have two keys already programmed in, you can program the keys yourself, as said above. If you do not have 2 keys, a locksmith has to do it. either way the locksmith must "cut" the keys mechanically. My guy charged $60 to program from scratch, with up to 4 keys.
I bought the keys on amazon. 2 for $20. Note: very important: look at the keys you have. There is a letter or number on it. You must match it with the new keys.

Confirmed. I have an '04 Expy and I ordered the FOBs on Amazon a few years ago. Most Walmarts carry the Key with the chip inside and will cut them for free. I think I ended up paying $15 each, but I have 6 total keys and FOBs for mine. Programming is SUPER simple.

Older thread I know, but not too old.

So if you only have one key, you have to have the new transponder key programmed by a locksmith or dealership. After you have that key set up, can you then use that new key with the original to program more keys yourself? I read where if one or both of the 2 keys are "clones"(?) you cannot do this procedure yourself. Could someone please clarify this for me? Thanks!

Any 2 working keys will allow owner programming. Some remote start installers, zip tie a key on the steering column. They do this to bypass PATS. It's hack, but works. So, you may have the second key.

The other one you'll see with the fatter buttons does work, but the buttons are so big you're constantly hitting them and opening your rear glass, or sounding the panic horn, or unlocking your doors and it has a very short remote range.
I tried it and after a month, threw it in the garbage and got the one shown above with the smaller buttons. So far no issues with accidental activations. It programs fine to the '03 or newer vehicles and has good remote range. Your outside mirrors and drivers seat memory may need to be reprogrammed to the new FOB, don't be alarmed. Just sync 'em to the FOB like you normally would.

Programming Ford Key and FOB

Step-by-Step Ford Key Fob Programming Instructions

1. Close the car doors, then open the driver-side door. Press the UNLOCK button on the driver-side door.
   
   
2. Next, turn the ignition from OFF to RUN 8 times. Do this within 10 seconds, making sure the 8th time ends on RUN. When you’ve entered programming mode, the door locks will lock and unlock. (Note: If the door locks don’t cycle, turn the key on/off faster.)
   
   
3. Press any button on the Ford remote to be programmed. Do this within 8 seconds. The door locks will cycle again to confirm the keyless entry remote is programmed and ready to use.
   
   
4. Have a second remote key fob? Again, press any button on the remote within 8 seconds to cycle the door locks. Repeat this step for any additional key fobs.
   
   
5. Finally, turn the ignition to OFF. The locks will again cycle to confirm programming is complete.

Setting Up Your Ford Memory Seats

Once you’ve got your seat, mirrors, telescopic steering column, and power pedals in the proper place, turn the key to put the ignition in the “On” position. Once you’ve got the power on, you’ll notice three buttons on the side panel of the driver’s side door. Press and hold the number 1 button for about five seconds until you hear a single chime. After the chime sounds, let go of the button and your seat settings have been saved! To test it out, simply move something a hair and press the button to watch it go back to your set position.


Setting Up Ford Key Fob Memory

For those times when you want your seat to be ready for you before you get inside your Ford vehicle, the key fob that you received with your vehicle can activate the memory seats for you! To sync your key fob with your memory seats, do everything we talked about earlier, except this time keep holding the appropriate memory button until you hear the chime twice. As soon as you hear the second chime, press the lock button on your key fob immediately. Now, every time you press the unlock button, your seat will automatically adjust to your preferred settings. This is especially helpful if you make use out of the easy entry and easy exit feature which moves the steering wheel and seat each time you get in and get out of your Ford.
