I haven't had my truck that long. A little over two weeks now.

I've only filled it up twice and this happened both time. I missed what happened the first time but saw it today.

When it got to the point that the tank was nearly full and the nozzle should kicked off, it overflowed rather violently. This was before the kickoff by the nozzle. There was a good bit of fuel that overflowed. I put a little more in like normal, which it took ok, but when the nozzle went to kick off again, it overflowed.

Is this a common thing with the Expeditions? If not, is there something I should check on?

I never have this happen on my other 3 cars and haven't it happen on any car in a long time. Both times I filled the Expedition up it's done it.

Any input is appreciated.

It happens sometimes with my 07' but rarely. I just figure that bitchcakes loves gas so much that she drinks too much and burps some up.

If it happens everytime, it could be a kinked fill hose, or something in the evap system.

Do you use the same gas pump each time? I thought gas pumps have the shutoff, not the vehicle. If gas overflows I blame the pump.

Same station but two different pumps. I get gas there all the time and this doesn't happen with my other vehicles.

You're correct, the cutoff is on the pump. This is like the flow in the tank & filler neck comes up too fast for the cutoff to engage before it overflows.

Seems strange. How about when slower filling? I set the speed slow to go buy lotto tickets while filling. Kills time and two birds with one stone. LOL!

Maybe some just take a fill slower than others.

Our navigator did this the last time I filled up though just a small splash before it cut off. Couldn't have been more than an ounce or two. Same station but different pump for me as well. I'll keep an eye out in about 2 months when it needs filled up again and see if it happens on the same pump. Be nice to know if I have some impending maintenance to get on

There are quite a few people who advise against this.
I think this is the problem here. But "what do I know?"

The shut off is part of the nozzle.before putting nozzle in tank point tip to the ground let any gas drain out!! There is a small hole in the spout that is the sensor to shut off if the previous person squeezed fuel in their tank and it is full the nozzle doesn't shut off correctly. Or sometimes they wear and the tube is not held to the spout. the inner tube floats inside the spout. I Was in Gas station repair for 10 years.

This happens to me all the time. Dealer took a look at it and replaced the canister, but did not fix the issue. There is a thread out there somewhere that used I believe a Chevy filler hose with a check valve? Let me see if I can find it

I do put hose in tank, open by trying to pump gas, and then select gas to start pumping. It made more sense to me than trying to clear hose by dumping fuel on ground. Don't know that it made a dimes worth of difference but I do a lot of other useless crap too.

I have a 2007. If I try and fill beyond the first auto stop it overflows every time...mind you after about the third time I stopped that practice but old habits die hard and I still forget from time to time. Newer auto stops are not just a liquid sensor but also a vapor lock mechanism. I find it much harder than any other vehicle to get the vapor lock correct and often have to manually hold and repetitively reset both the lever and the nozzle angle. My guess is that the filler neck is not fully sealed. Evidence of this is that the gas never leaks out from the top but from somewhere on the filler neck that is not visible. That is somewhat disconcerting since I suspect that means that the cap is not going to keep gas contained in the event of a roll over or high angle off roading. Anyone have insight into that?

I've been thinking about this. I wonder if it has to do with anti-siphion.

This has happened to me several times over the years and it is only one Safeway gas station that it happens at.
