Removing Nameplates For Repaint.

I am considering having my 2001 Expy repainted. There are nameplates on the front fenders and rear hatch that are looking very weathered.

How are these removed? I will either replace with new or perhaps not put them back.

Also along each door is a bumper that has a fake plastic "chrome" insert. How are the bumpers removed, and can the insert be replaced?

The door bumpers, otherwise known as body molding, are attached with adhesive tape. I believe the nameplates are as well . Use a heat gun or even a hair blow dryer to apply some heat and they will peel off. Don't know about replacing the chrome insert, but it can be covered with tape in the color of your choice. New aftermarket molding is also available.

I have a good heat gun so will put that to use. The body molding chrome insert is awful. If I can find a suitable plain aftermarket without an insert I will replace them.

If you have it, a plastic scraper may help

Heat it up with a heat gun then use fishing line like a saw to cut through the adhesive. Just remember that there will be two guide nipples so when you get to a point were the fishing line wont cut you probably reached one of them. Just start on the other side

So there are guide holes behind the badges? I don't want any stinking badges! I guess I will have to put new ones on or have the body shop fill the holes.

I know there are for the front fenders but I’m not sure about the rear lift gate.

Put some F250 or Powerstroke emblems in their place. Would make people look twice.

All the badges have the alignment pins. They peel off pretty easy. They make an adhesive remover that will take the leftover reside off. Heat gun and a plastic scraper will take the door moulding adhesive off.. If you’re going to repaint, I would leave it ALL off, especially the moulding .. The result will be sleek and clean..

Yeah no way I am going to have the body shop tape off and spray around all that stuff. I will take off all I can including tail lights before they get it.

I once had a new silver Chevy celebrity station wagon as a work vehicle. Living in a swanky neighborhood. I pulled all the badges because they were taped on and the summer heat in Miami made it simple. My neighbors thought it was some Volvo or other exotic import wagon.

Don't know about replacing the chrome insert, but it can be covered with tape in the color of your choice.

As I did here, with black duct tape. If you use a thicker mil tape it will last a couple years before needing a redo. Duct tape now comes in many patterns and colors. Bought some camo the other day as well as diamond plate tape.



You can also use a vinyl sticker film self adhesive (wrap) which you can order in mirror chrome, carbon fiber or pretty much any color or pattern you want inexpensively.

Here in Georgia, we call duct tape on cars, "Alabama chrome".
Nothing against Alabama, I love the state and people there so much that I own property there.

Unless the duct tape is actually holding an important part onto the car, its really just for showing off.
