Update:

My Expedtion was returned by the dealer on Thursday evening. It took 42 days (six weeks) to repair it after the transmission failed while the dealer technician was test driving it. The delay was caused by the failure of Ford to provide service parts in a timely manner.

In addition to the transmission rebuild, the dealer replaced the 4WD vacuum check-valve (not the vacuum solenoid), and also a coil pack on cylinder two (as it had a stored code for a misfire).

I had a Ford Fusion sedan as a rental from the dealer for 39 days. My Ford Premium extended service plan paid for all the repairs and the 39-days of rental, costing me a $100 deductible + tax.

I was originally told by the dealer the transmission would be replaced with a new unit, but then was told Ford warranty insisted the transmission be torn-down, inspected and rebuilt.

That sucks. If my transmission guy, who has been working on transmissions for 30+ years and managed to keep his Dodge pickup trans (which he calls "the worst transmission ever made") running for 450k+ miles, I'd have 100% confidence it would be as good or better than a new/reman from Ford. On the other hand, I don't trust my dealership techs to even drop the oil pan without f***ing it up (which they did while my truck was still under warranty). Good luck with it.

I have no faith that the transmission repair will last.

The notes on the service invoice stated there were metal particles in the transmission, and various parts had to be replaced and the transmission cooler flushed.

Critical components should be serviced or rebuilt in a clean facility - such as when the component is built. Not some greasy, dirty dealer repair facility where the technician is trying to beat the clock for his flat-rate repair allowance.

Mine went at 111, 000 miles, never towed with it. This is my 4th expedition never had a problem with the others, got rid of them at 250,000 miles. Dealer quoted me 10,000 for a new one. I got ford to pick up half the price. I was in shock at the price, dont they fix them any more ?

They rebuilt it at the dealer? I'd be willing to bet they couldn't get another transmission so that was the only option.

Starting to be the way of the world. Any time I have an engine concern, no one wants to do the work. They will gladly drop in another engine, but if there are diagnostics and a lot of labor involved they don't want the business. I guess there are higher profit margins just dropping in new engines/transmissions.

Sometimes the labor cost would almost be as much as a rebuilt engine/transmission that has a warranty and all new parts.

Sure, but that's not what I'm talking about. It's been a few years since I have been able to find a local shop (and by local I mean dozens of shops within a 45 min drive) willing to do any major engine work - let's say $1-3k worth. They all just want to toss in a rebuilt engine for $6k.

Yes - rebuilt at the Ford dealer.

The technician that talked to me after the transmission failed during his test drive stated the dealership would install a new transmission.

Later, the service advisor told me that the Ford warranty department required that they tear-down the transmission, send pictures to them and have the repair authorized (I have the Ford Premium Care service contract). The advisor said the warranty department required them to rebuild the transmission.

See my next post........

After driving the repaired vehicle one week and 240 miles, the vehicle began bucking and shaking severely while driving on level ground at 60 mph. No towing or cargo.

I managed to return the vehicle to the dealer, driving slowly. It now is in their service department, awaiting another repair. I’m driving a tiny Ecosport rental (a miserable vehicle).

I know people really like extended warranties on newer vehicles, but this is why I don't get them. Usually these are good for several hundred thousand miles, but shit happens. I would have bought a factory certified rebuilt trans, installed it in over a weekend, and been done with it. Waiting months for a repair that's really not that difficult, and then getting it done poorly is why extended warranties are a waste of time.

My sister in-law had a dodge with a lifetime warranty, her trans went at 50,000 miles. She took it to the local dealer and they rebuilt it. Same thing, couple hundred miles later it locked up. Trailered it to a different dealership and the tech found multiple missing bolts, and no oil in it (was a manual trans). So they installed a new transmission and it's made it another 100,000 miles now.
