P Rated Tires for occasional tow?

Hello, My brother is looking for some decent All Terrain tires but most of the D an E rated tires for towing are very expensive. We got quoted $700 for some Kumho All terrian tires that are standard rated (i think P rated).

My question is, my brother does not tow frequent but he Might tow my 18" camping trailer once in a great while and he always loads up his expedition with camping gear and sometimes a regular trailer to load camping gear onto, Will these tires hold up for an occasional tow or would you not risk it?

D and E rated tires appear to be hundreds of dollars more but he doesnt want to spend the extra $$ if he really doesnt need too.

Whats your take on this? Thanks

If any of you guys know of a tow rated tire for cheap, let me know.

I run LT 275/60 r 17's on mine and do a considerable amount of towing with it and they hold up fine. The LT's are made for light duty (1/2 ton) trucks and SUV's and with the load you are talking about they will do fine.

It won't let me upload any pic's right now but I regularly tow a 18' car hauler with anything from cars and trucks on it to around 1 1/2-2 cords of woo (The Expedition is almost maxed out on its GCWR rating) and the tires barley have any "squat" to them at all.

Are LT the type of tire or a specific model that a specific tire co. makes? Excuse me for my ignorance but just learning and I want to make sure I get exactly what I need. Thanks again.

The LT tires will have c,d, and e ratings as well but they are a stronger tire. They do require more air pressure in them to achive the higher loads thou so the ride may get a little "stiffer". Most (if not all) tire manufacturers carry a LT series, just talk to a sales person at your local tire shop and they can walk you thru it.
