Expedition started to run alittle hot. It was fine with the 170spd thermostat for a couple months. Found multiple leaks. 1 from the heater hose T and one front the hose connected to the reservoir. So I ended up going ahead and started to replace both heater hose, and the upper radiator hose. Also replacing waterpump, valve covers. SInce its cracked and leaking from driver side, and adding a true cool 40k cooler. But instead of deleting the heat exchanger. I will be running from the exchanger to the trans cooler. Now since I have no history of the vehicles. I was wondering if it would be safe to drain and replace the transmission filter?. Mileage is at 136k. 1000010980.jpg1000010969.jpg

Details on the lines/connections you made for the trans cooling loop? Pics of the connections at the HX are a little fuzzy.

Might consider a PPE transmission pan while you are in there doing all that and thinking about a fluid and filter change. It'll help with the cooling and also give you an actual drain plug so you can do the fluid easier in the future. You gotta pull the pan anyway for the current fluid change.

So from the Hot side (outlet) of the cooler port 8an fitting to the H/X (8an to 1/2 compression fitting) you will have to cut the existing lines.
Then from outlet of the H/X also a (8an to 1/2 compression fitting) to the front 40k cooler. Then the other end of cooler to the inlet port of the transmission manifold.

I did the filter and fluid while doing the cooler. I had a ppe ready to install but honestly. The transcooler has more affect the pan would do. With 90f ambient temperature. I was getting around 145-165 2hrs of driving. No shifting problems at all. I parked for 30mins idle Highest I got at idle was 168.

So those are just compression fittings on the metal lines and you didn't have to flare the ends?

Still trying to decide if I want the heat exchanger in the loop, I found a valve that will bypass until its set temp, so like 165 or something like that. I sort of feel the heat exchanger isn't helpful.

Yes just compression fitting. I drove for 2hrs and doesn't leak. I've done sports mode and manual mode. No leak. Reason for me keeping the H/X. Remember H/X is still there to help cool. It goes through it. Cools down very little the goes to front oil cooler and cools down some more. I will be wrapping the line with reflective heat tape to help it alittle more. The front cooler will not do majority of the cooling until wind hits it. So in my mind. When the vehicle 1st starts up. It can still somewhat heat it up.

Curious to see how this changes your temps. Do you tow by chance? I have def had a few times where heat soak was a problem and the transmission gets hot and the coolant can't cool it down at all (due to how hot the coolant is).

Does this kind of modification void manufacture warranty and/or service contract on transmission?

1000008410.jpgI was towing this when I started noticing the transmission temp. I picked it up from storage to bring it home. 15min away and it spiked too 245 at home. Also before all the maintenance I did. The ECT was 221-226 and the Trans would be at 223 after 2hrs of driving.
Now with all that's done. its seeing 200-210 COOLANT TEMP. and 145-165 TRANS TEMP when rolling. When at idle in traffic it will get to 177 trans temp. This is in Houston with 95F ambient temp. Reason for me keeping the heat exchanger is when its cold it will still heat it up a little. But when its rolling the air will cool down the transmission. So far its doing the job. 20250703_122426.jpg

Totally agree with this statement. I was originaly going the path of the F-150 Mishimoto AT cooler to plumb after the HX. Even thought about about completely bypassing.

Did you even consider doing a fan setup such as a Derale Electra-Cool Remote Transmission Cooler Kit?

Nice color BTW. ;)

Yes in the future I will. AFP makes a single and dual fan shroud for the 40k coolers. I also have the 1/8npt fitting on the transmission coolant manifold to install a fan switch. But for now. Its really doing a great job of cooling. I don't see the need to put a fan yet.

That's was the original plan. But its still a option if needed since the cooler port is there already. What temps are you getting with bypassing?
