Sounds like your fan clutch is not grabbing and spinning. Since it cools off at highway speed when air is flowing through the radiator due to speed alone and it suffers at idle and low speed where the fan does the cooling that’s the dead giveaway. The fan should be quite loud when ambient temp is high with a/c on at idle and on takeoff when the clutch grabs it and spins it. I can hear my fan over my interior blower and radio if it’s hot out and the A/C is on.... when the clutch engages the fan gets louder and sounds a bit like an airplane if it’s dead quiet when you pop the hood somethings wrong.

Ok just checked and both fans are running. Any other ideas?
Hmmm.....

When you checked the coolant level, did you take the cap off the radiator or just look at the reservoir? I want to confirm the cooling system is full of coolant.

If its full, that means you're having flow problems (to or from the radiator). That can be caused by a failing water pump or a failed thermostat.

You say you just bought it. When did it start this behavior?

I just checked the reservoir. I purchased it 3 weeks ago in Arizona and drove it to Texas without any problems. This just started two days ago.

What is being used for coolant?
Any discoloration in the surge tank?
Any pulsing or bubbling of coolant in the tank?
Wash the condenser and radiator with a hose to make sure none of it is blocked.

How long was it run with the temp gauge in the hot zone?

If you have access to a temp gun you can read the coolant temp on the hoses as it is running.

Ah yes 2010, you have electric fans my bad. I get that mixed up at times as ford still uses fan clutches on some and not on others. I believe 2010 is when the expys switched to electric fans.

Not sure if 2010 has same lower rad shroud setup as my 2007, but, the lower half of shroud flips up & locks in place with two tabs on rad support so one can gain easier access to oil filter, etc. I forgot to drop the lower shroud down earlier this year and when summer temps got into 90's my expy began running very hot when at idle/traffic, but cooled when at higher speeds.

First thought it was fan clutch, bought one I got for super deal on Amazon ( $60 & Motorcraft) but, before I replaced it, had expy on ramps/jack stands for tranny filter/fluid change & saw shroud was up.

Dropped it back down & have been driving all summer & runs cool as a cucumber. So, perhaps whoever last changed oil/filter forgot to drop lower shroud back into place? Worth a check.

Besides the great advice you got from the others, did you check to be sure the engine oil is up to the proper level. And I probably know the answer to the 2nd question, but did the lot/dealer, offer any warranty? You might go back there and see what they'll do? I would. At the very least maybe they'll fix it at a reduced rate, worth a shot, unless you bought it from a private party.
