2015 EL Limited 57k miles... passenger side running board bit the dust today. I was at work when the wife sent me a video of it making a really bad grinding/binding noise and it was real slow to deploy. My paw in-law tried to lube it up the best he could but it didn’t help. I told her to just go in the settings and leave them out. She’s short and needs them to get in and out, and so do my 2 kids in carpool. I’m guessing it’s the motor that died? Just tried it and it won’t even go up anymore. It tries but just stops.

Think it’ll be alright to run them deployed for a while? I’m not gonna be able to get it to the dealer till after Christmas.

The wife swung by the dealer to let them check it out. Service guy said he thinks their might be a TSB on it? Either way I have to bring it in, let them diagnose it and order parts and then bring it back in when the parts come in. And for some reason the car won't let them stay out? I have it set in the menu for them to stay out and she says they keep trying to go up...well the drivers side goes up and the passenger side just makes the noise and stays out.

A TSB still leaves you holding the bill unless the vehicle is under warranty. Also, last time I had one of these repaired (under warranty) the dealerships weren't replacing just the motor. They were replacing the entire assembly for ~$2K per side. You can pick up a used motor or a Dorman replacement for a few hundred. You can get a generic Chinese motor on eBay for less than $100.

The RBs should stay out if they are set to stay out. If they're attempting to go back up, I would question whether they are set properly in the menu. In any case, I wouldn't leave them out. They hang low and could easily get caught up. When mine gave out post-warranty I helped the malfunctioning board into the closed position when it was attempting to go up. Then I disconnected the malfunctioning RB at the connector located under the RB. In order to keep the connector dry, I bagged it up in a couple Ziplocs and rubber-banded the bags.

We have the extended warranty so that should take care of it.

You are making an assumption about this, right up until your Warranty claims person tells you it's covered. Just make the call so "should take care of it", changes to either "yea, it's covered" or "darn, they won't cover it".....at least by then you will no longer be hoping and guessing.

Manup posted his experience I'm sure in part, so others would not go on some well-founded assumption that it was going to be cost free!

On my 2015, even if you have the boards set to “out” in the menu, they will automatically retract once you exceed 5mph. This is a designed protection mechanism. If you want them to stay deployed you have to unplug them...but in my opinion that’s a fast way to scraping one off next time you hit road debris or park next to a curb. They hang really low in the deployed position.
